Brake rhs rear drum over hub Mk6 2000 2.4

07 11 17. Transit mk6 2000 2.4 rear brakes rhs.
The brake drum fits over the hub – the wheels/wheel nuts hold the drum in place on the wheel studs.
The drum eventually came off by hammering it from the inside – hammer and drift – lots of rust.
There was a lip on the drum. There was a lot of rust on the drum.
Could not see the adjuster through the oblong hole in the back plate. Luckily the adjuster was not extended.
Had the adjuster been extended the drum could not have been got off as the lip could have caught on the shoes.
Later found the oblong hole is not in line with the toothed nut.
Removed two side springs – lifted up both shoes – reduced auto adjuster length by screwing the knurled nut towards me as I sat facing the hub – wiggled the shoes and the bottom spring came out of the leading shoe then all came away – removed the handbrake cable from the arm, not easy to do.
Found the hand brake cable arm was seized to the trailing shoe and possibly the adjuster was not moving.
Very dirty and rusty.
Reassembly – fit the handbrake cable to the arm - have the two shoes between the hub and back plate - above the hub and slave put in the spring on the trailing shoe the adjusting arm on the leading shoe – bring the leading shoe up past the horizontal to reduce the angle between the shoes at the top and until the spring can go onto the arm then bring the shoes down – fit the adjuster with it fully screwed in - fit to the slave – fit the bottom spring – put the bottom of the shoes into the bottom retainers – fit the side springs – the leading shoe needs a wedge to hold it in place whilst the side spring is fitted.
The arm that is fitted to the leading shoe which moves the adjuster toothed nut did not seem to be moving the nut.
The arm could settle in more than one position.
The arm was bent inwards so that it did move the toothed nut.
After releasing the seized handbrake cable arm and adjusting the adjuster arm so that the brake worked and adjusting the adjuster so that the shoes were out enough to allow the drum to be pushed over them found that after pumping the foot pedal and using the handbrake that the handbrake went up 2 or 3 notches. For nine years plus it had gone up several notches.
Clues to brake problem are handbrake goes up more than 2 or 3 notches. Under the vehicle where the handbrake cable splits to the right and left brakes – if one of the cables is a bit slack or has less tension on it when the handbrake is pulled up then that brake is not working properly.
