Mk7 Noisy engine & slow throttle

Postby HuMpH » Sat Nov 11, 2017 4:54 pm

Hi all,
recently bought a mk7 07plate 2.2 tdci, when 1st starting up I have no throttle at all for a few seconds then when revved I get a bit of white smoke and the engine sounds really raspy/tinny as though there is no power.
Once I start to drive she is fine except for being a little noisy, no more smoke and pulls fine. I took it to have brakes done yesterday and when I pulled in garage the lad remarked how bad it sounded and that it sounds f**k'd.
I am now in panic mode and thinking I've bought a wrong un, has anyone had similar issues or able to suggest any info.
I am not mechanically minded at all so sorry if the description is vague, I am trying to find someone local that can read codes and knows transits but until then any advice is most welcome.
I have tried a few searches but "raspy" and "no throttle" dont bring up my issue.
Cheers Ian

Yep, certainly get codes read...then we can go from there

Could possibly do with checking the injector clamps and/or the copper injector sealing washers, they are known to come loose and cause similar noises. Might also do well to get pump, pilot and injector learns done, along with PCM firmware update too.

Any "decent" diesel mechanic/garage should be able to sort this for you....if not, we may have a member close and handy who may be able to help....lots of clever chaps with the right kit to help on here.

ok codes read but guy had cleared unit before I got chance to get the actual code numbers..He said use van for a day or so and he would read them again.
3 items came to light,1st one was glowplug circuit reported a fault, second was an injector fault and third was fuel sensor detected water.
I did notice the water was on min mark a few days ago and filled it up to the max mark but today when he did codes I looked and it is on min mark again.
The mechanic who came said he thought one of the injectors was faulty as soon as he started van, so he was not surprised when the fault showed up on his machine.
The van has had a new fuel filter just before I bought it so maybe the seller was in the know.
Anyway the mechanic says he can take van in one day this week and explore more closely so I guess I best get ready to part with some serious cash lol.

I tell you straight here

get it on ford id software and if it does have faulty injectors it will tell you straight away,

do pump learn check fuel rail pressure etc , then do the injector learns and if it doesn't do them then it has faulty injectors simples

:D

and get you mechanic to do a leak of on the injectors

before he says anything else

other wise you going to pay for his f*** ups simple

Just be wary that with these Transits, as Karl says, all is not always as it seems...don't part with any serious cash until you've done your homework..!

Your "fuel sensor detected water" issue is a well known fault and has nothing to do with the coolant level, (If you're losing coolant it will be a different problem), It's a PCM software issue and was fixed in later PCM updates.
Your glow plug could possibly require replacement, but most transits will run fine without them, although the higher powered 140 Mk7's still get a bit testy starting in cold weather without them. If indeed it does require replacement, it's best to do all of them at the same time so you know they're all good to go.
With the suspect injector, it's best to do an injector leak-off test first, this will give a fair indication of injector health. If this proves ok, a full set of "Pump, Pilot & Injector Learns" and a PCM update may help greatly.

sorry if this is a stupid question but do you mean find someone with that software to read codes again ?.

I am having trouble finding a transit specialist local, so going to ring some garages tomorrow and ask if they can do the leak off test and if they can update the PCM and do the learns you list.
I have bought a Ford F SUPER diagnostic Interface Scanner but have never used one and not even sure it will be capable of doing what I need to do, it will be a case of reading everything I can find first lol.
I did warn you I was not mechanically minded, now if you want some nice stairs fitted in your van..wood I can do. :)
Huge thanks for your help and advice, I appreciate your patience.

Van is going in garage tomorrow for the leak test ect so hopefully have more info then.
My ebay code reader arrived today and just had to plug it in and try it :) The guy wiped it yesterday but it did give me the same 3 items he found.
The Injector fault says code:P062B Internal module injector controller
additional symptom - circuit voltage below threshold

so am I right in thinking this could need a new module or do they still need to delve deeper.

Hi Get the injectors checked, if it was me I'd fix the glow plugs circuit, most likely need all replacing, if 1 is shorting it can be bringing the battery voltage down which won't help.
Injector fault could be a faulty injector solenoid, pcm, glow circuit, battery, wiring.

Get the mechanic to check the resistance on the injectors, 70 ohms thereabouts according to denso.

Let us know how you get on, Karl is closer to you but I May be able to help if needed.
