Mk6 Transit: Questions, Conversions and Education!

Postby ZenTransit » Wed Nov 15, 2017 7:07 pm

Hi all,

Looking forward to being part of the forum. I have been lurking as a reader for many months and have taken the plunge to ask a few questions. A couple of bits about me

1. I am good with tech and OK(ish) with a drill but not very mechanical so go easy.
2. I own a 2006 MWB Transit with dual sliding doors with less than 65k on the clock.

...and I want to convert it into a kick-ass campervan for use on a regular basis. There is just one snag; I have 3 children and the van only has two seats (1 is a captain swivel) so will def be needing to add at least 3 seats somehow (either a bench in the front and 2 seats in the rear or 3 seats in the rear.

So, now I have taken the plunge I have a few questions which concern making the van as good as it can be. Mechanical questions first.

a. The van has very little rust and has been hardly used; is it worth undersealing the chassis to keep it in good condition?
b. Is Terracleaning worth doing to keep the engine in good order?
c. What typical things go wrong with a 2006 280 Transit that I should simply replace/improve now before I do anything to the interior?
d. Can I install air conditioning?

I have a few more dozen questions but I will try and group them into posts that makes sense together electrics, fitting seats/rib/R&Rbed etc.

Thanks all, really appreciate any responses.

Regards,

Steve

1st ? Yes underseal it to death including inside the chassis rails,

2nd ? Don't bother, spend the money on a good service and service it regularly,

3rd ? Anything

Do you know what engine you have, if not what does the badge on the drivers/passenger door say. N

Sweet. I will get that booked in. Anyone you can refer in the East Midlands? Or is it easy enough to do myself if I have access to a ramp? Next door neighbour is a mechanic and he owes me a favour.

Rgr that.

Fair enough.

Its a mk7 if its a 2.2  Undersealing is easy enough you can either brush it on or spray it on, the chassis box sections use waxoyl in a spray thingamajig you can buy it as a kit, I have no idea who does it I the west midlands stevo might know he's from around there :D N

You anywhere near Nottingham?

I know of a good body shop that is going to do mine at some point.

I might know of someone selling a triple seat (think it has seat belts fitted) in Warrington I will ask how much he wants for them tomorrow and let you know. N

That would be awesome. Am I correct in assuming all Transits have the chassis holes for Ford rear seats; you just need to line them up and ensure you have spreader plates underneath?

There is a under body treatment place in Rugby http://www.before-n-after.co.uk/ that will do campervans if you don't want to tackle it yourself.

I'm just down the road from you in Northampton, and finished my campervan build just a couple of months ago. If you need any ideas or advice give me a shout.

No you would have to drill the holes yourself. N

I've got photos on the "Campervan Progress Reports" thread in the Campervans and Conversions sub section.
