Weird looking fuel filter housing on 125 tddi mk6

Postby vitasik » Wed Nov 15, 2017 8:54 pm

Hi chaps

I happen to have mk6 2.4 tddi rwd 125 with supposedly knackered pump. Usually electronics go on these, but sods law - its not electronic problem ( you see I can repair them) . I dont seems to see sufficient fuel pressure being delivered to injectors.

Looked around engine bay and noticed something I haven't met before on mk6 ( mind you I have worked on 90 bhp mostly).
I have seen fuel filter housings both bog standard and ones you could prime with hand, but this thing seems to have electric pump on its top. Anyone can shed some light? I wonder is it possible that Injection pump is not self priming version like 90bhp? I want to try to hook it up straight to fuel can missing filer and electronic pump.

Injection pump is 0 470 504 010.

Thanks

Can you hear the pump run? - high pitched whining noise once the motor starts, or if the ignition is left switched on for a while.

If not, is the filter full to the brim?

Sounds like a lift pump I believe the very early mk6's had them on certain PS, I could be wrong though. N

Yes your right.

My mk6 had one, no mucking about filling new filters just cycle the ignition a couple of times and the filter was filled for you.

Early mk6 with vp44 is prone to electronics issues but sometimes the pump can fail mechanically.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

The lift pump made bleeding mine dead easy, switch ignition on to let pump and ECU do their thing, pump starts and after a few seconds there fuel coming out of 2 injector unions, nip them up and a second or so later same thing at the other 2. Crank motor over and in 3 turns it started.

Thanks for all your replies.
As I say - I haven't come across filter housing with electric pump on it. When I crack some injector pipes there is diesel coming but not sufficient quantity IMO. I will try first to see if I undo infeed to pump will I get good diesel flow there as might be something much simpler like filter or pipes clogged.

So do you think injection pump from this set-up would be able to draw diesel from clean can directly connected to its input on its own?

Yes it will, but as other said, does the lift pump run when you turn ignition on. It should run for a few seconds and then shut down (Don't try starting the van, just turn on key and then listen to pump) If it doesn't run, then you wont get it to start / stay running as the pump actually restricts the diesel flow when not operating.

Did you hit a "bump" before it stopped running? as there is an inertia fuel shut off switch in the drivers footwell, which stops the lift pump from working if it activates.

Sorry for not replying... bloody 12h shifts and weather. Haven't had chance playing with transit. I got it as non runner to use as temp offroad dry storage for 2 engines that were in a way. Its not the need to repair it, its curiosity that drives me. On my next offs I have one Jag to sort out for MOT and than weather allowing will play with transit. Can of clean fuel and some 8mm piping should be a good start.

Will keep this topic up to date.

Haha! Thanks for this...been trying to find out what that electric gizmo on fuel filter housing of the 125 mk 6 we collected today was. It's a donor engine to replace a 90, both rwd, both analogue clocks. Took the 125 ECU and a key too...am I on a power upgrade? Or must I use 90 pump and injectors with original ECU and chip?
Thanks
John
