ive just changed all the rockers on my 2.4di due to same problem ,did make engine run quieter but still have the thumping noise through resonator, also just rebuilt head and checked all pistons before new head went on,all good.so dont be surprised if noise is still there after changing rockers

did you use new tappets or secondhand?
i had an awful thumping six months ago and when i took out the tappets i think about 6 were seized-it was about 6,cant remember. so i stuck in ones from my feked, bottom end, engine and it cured the thumping instantly.

do the tappets just pull out of the arm? and are they meant to be hard or with a bit of give in them when new?

I bought a set online £109 for the lot,you should be able to push the spring in and it should return itself, all of mine were solid that's why I replaced them all, not sure if you can free them up
