Had this with mine and tbh at this stage it could be anything..
Shot in the dark - mine was the wiring loom shorting to the body(where it runs underneath the radiator).

Coil light is the eml light, you need a elm327 and download forscan for free, mk6 are not obd2 compliant, I'll guess your fuel pump or the electric part of the pump is toast or the wiring to it around the starter motor. N

It's probably not enough pressure to fire up a diesel engine. You need a massive amount of pressure from the injector to overcome a cylinder on the compression stroke.
If it runs on easy start, then its a fuelling problem you have :(

^^^^^^what he said plus a di needs alot of fuel pressure to open the injector to allow fuel into the cylinder. N

Personally I would get the codes read first, you can buy the elm327 for less that 20 sovs, as for the mondeo pump I dunno but I do know the transits have two types of pump depending on the vans PS. Plus it would need coding to the van. N

Inspect the wiring, sh*t dirty job but pull the covering off and check each wire, especially around the starter motor where they chaff, I found a few small nicks in my wiring which stopped the van idling. N

Scantool-direct.com, amazon, ebay, you need the one that says ford, Lincoln, Mazda, either wired or WiFi, go on forscan.co.uk (or .com) the website explains which one you need. N
