Can I please ask for some advice on internal roof liningTYVM

Postby Reeco » Wed Nov 22, 2017 12:33 am

Hi All, I would like to line the inside the back of my Transit to stop condensation dripping onto the equipment in the back of my Transit. Would anyone of you know what options do I have regarding materials and how would I stick it to the roof internally. Thank You in advance. ATB Reeco

For my Campervan conversion I used the Thermoliner on the walls and roof. It is dead easy to use as you just cut it to size with a stanley knife, peel about 6 -9 inches of the backing paper away and press it in place. Then you can just reach behind, grab the backing paper and pull it away as you press the liner onto the roof. The glue is super-strong and high temperature resistant so won't just fall off on a hot day. It's military grade material that has been used to insulate the inside of armoured vehicles for Iraq and Afghanistan and is WAY better than the bubble wrap type material that is often used.

You just need to make sure that you thoroughly wash and de-grease the roof panels before use.

Bit of old carpet will stop it my old mk6 had carpet squares stuck to the roof worked well £3.99 :P
You only need fanny about with insulation if you want to attempt some sort of temperature control

That my boy doesn't work for me
They are bloody rubbish those fletmers

The bottom shed has a tin roof and part of that is open 3 sides
And that still gets condensation dripping from it

I've got insulation 'quilt' and oil impregnated hardboard in mine. Makes a big difference when full of wet dirtbikes.

Don't forget, if you have moisture in the van, by covering the roof you've only moved the problem, to under the floor boards or ply linning etc.

To reduce condensation you need warm air to pick up the moisture and a vent to release the warm air into the atmosphere.

A vent won't work without warm air.
Only warm air can carry moisture and warm air then rises.

It would ... if it was a house
but being a van once you drive it with heater on fag in gob the damp air is replaced
Through the vents in the bulkhead
I've had dogs arsewashing vans for the past 70 years and they are just piss wet inside constantly
Its not a problem till it drips on your head

That's real piss btw

i have been in both places and i never saw any non-millitary insulation that was not factory fitted if a vehicle even had any insulation.

I don't doubt for a second that what you are saying is true Dutch Guy, but when I was looking for insulation material for my van I found a manufacturers website for this or a near identical product, which stated that it was developed as a result of a request from the military for an insulating material for use in vehicles in extreme climates like Iraq and Afghanistan.

being asked and actually being used are 2 different things. for example: the door seals for something like a bushmaster are specially treated sort of neoprene that costs 1600 euro per roll of 30 meters wich is a insane price. until you realise that seal needs to hold all known variations of biological and chemical warfare weapons without leaking ofr at least 12 hours.
then that sh*t is no longer expensive. but replacing it with cheap non-certified neoprene has costed at least a dozen lives that i know about. (american soldiers)

so anything not certified by the builder of said vehicle is not coming on a vehicle.

but slighty more ontopic: just get the cheap stuff, glue it on and put in a thin layer of glassfiber against that, put the lining back and be happy.

Now then,
Now then
This is why vents don't work
A sooty van with a bit of tarp over it ,
Open at the back so plenty of ventilation
But when its cold like this morning it gets condensation on the inside of the tarp and drips
Vents? Damp air trapped inside your van ? Phifffffffffffffft :P
