Help with part identification

Postby petejames » Thu Nov 23, 2017 8:44 pm

Hi all,

apologies is this is a very dumb question but have spent the past couple of hours reading through old posts and couldn't find an answer.

I have just acquired a 2010 Mk7 2.2TDCI transit which has been through the wars a bit with 240k on the clock.
It has just had an MOT (before I got it) with two advisories, one for an oil leak and one for a coolant leak.
The coolant leak looks to be a bit more worrying in the immediate future as I can see the levels dropping pretty quickly over a couple of days.

Looking in the engine bay I can see some weeping of what looks like coolant from the highlighted corroded part in the picture below. Could any of you shed some light on what part it is and what the scale of job a replacement / repair would be?

I have literally no idea about engines etc. so just trying to get an idea of whether it is worth taking to the garage and what to expect when I get it there.

Any help much appreciated!

Looks like the EGR valve.

Should be quite easy to change yourself.
Most important task is getting the rust out of the hose connection, this looks like the reason for your leak and there will be bits of rust stuck in the end of the hose.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Might be worth it to push the boat out and get a new hose as well.

Looks like the poor thing's been at bottom of the ocean for a while...

Plenty of corrosion happening amongst that lot.

Does your exhaust have steam coming out sometimes..?? Could have EGR cooler issues causing coolant loss too.

Yes I know, my heart sank a bit when I opened the bonnet and saw all the corrosion, especially as the bodywork is surprisingly rust free apart from a bit of spotting above the windscreen on the front of the Hi Top roof.

Don't suppose there is much I can do about it (corrosion in the engine bay) though or if there would be any benefit?

The van needs to last me around 6 months while we finish a house renovation so I'm up for trying anything low cost I can do to nurse it through.

Earlier vans have an egr valve that is not water cooled.

You might be ok with removing both hoses from the valve, cleaning them inside and connecting them with a hose joint.
