Mk 7 still not starting

Postby oldwoodcutter » Sat Dec 09, 2017 4:39 pm

My mk 7 tipper is 61 plate 115 . Had problems in cold weather it fires up ok, but at very low revs then after few seconds shuts itself off. Starts ok again but still same low revs and ecu shuts off just after engine rattles and smokes.
In November the fault memory was checked, no faults stored, pump and injector relearn and recheck, fault still present after a frosty morning .
So prv replaced, and pressure reg valve, with new filter. Pump and injectors relearned after the new valves fitted.
Still same again, starts ok but low (800/850) revs, a rattle and a clatter then a shut off.
Wait few minutes try again and 2nd or 3rd time it will keep rumming, but never at fast idle, and off we go.
When warm runs perfectly, only 47k genuine miles.
Any words of help gratefully accepted, thankyou.

Oil pump maybe? Check etis to see if your van was needing the oil pump recall. N

Thanks Ned, just checked and no outstanding oil pump recall.
I am wondering oil too, as only happens in cold temperatures, but I change oil and filter every 5k with ford oil and filter.
Previously thought tensioner but Fords tell me tensioner issues were way before mk 7s.
I always drive it very carefully, and do correct starting and stopping procedure.

Does the throttle work when it first starts ?
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Ah now that’s something else, while it’s just started up,in low revs mode, if I just touch the throttle slightly to bring it up to where it should be on fast idle, it stops itself immediately. It doesn’t like me doing that at all.

isn't the first turn of the key governed by the ecu on these more fuel , on the euro 5 the fuel system is primed by the tank pump to the lift pump, then the high pressure pump then takes over

can you post your reg :D so we can check if its euro 4/5

They can all do odd things when started :!:

When I had a poorly non-start battery it would sometimes run slowly and not respond to throttle for a few seconds before the revs recovered and it behaved.
Does the rev counter stay at zero when it runs slow :?:

HJ61 OYU. No when it runs slow rev counter shows 800 to 850. Throttle pedal at first is unresponsive to pressure. Thankyou.

What oil is in it, and when was it last changed?
Thick old or wrong oil will cause starting issues like this
Ford Transit Custom 280S Trend 105ps
Does this train stop on Merseyside?

Yes Ake it’s the proper ford oil bought from ford dealer, changed in August . I garage it overnight too to try to keep it frost free. I’ve had this truck for 4 years and every winter I have this blinking same problem, shutting itself off in cold weather startup, and barely ticking over until the motor gets a little bit of heat in it.

It might be proper Ford oil but what grade..?? Should be 5w30. The PCM needs to see normal idle rpms for a few seconds before it will activate the alternator and throttle pedal, if the rpm doesn't come up within several seconds, the PCM will shut it down. When cold and if the oil is a bit thick/viscous...she may struggle...mine did this until I put the right grade of oil in it. I un-knowingly, (coz I was a numpty  ) put 20w50 oil in mine, would fire up easily, run for a few seconds, then shut down....had me befuddled until a nice chap on here told be aboot the thick oil issue.

Not totally sure, but I think the latest PCM update helps with this too.

The local Ford dealer stores told me ford formula f synthetic 5w 30 . They could have advised me wrong and this maybe totally unsuitable, if it is then they will have a lot to answer for.
What grade should it be please. Thanks.

Oh sorry, thanks Mr Knobrot, so it is the correct grade then.
This is a bit of a puzzler, something’s obviously going on, it really does struggle to tick over in these first stages, sometimes stopping and immediately starting itself again, before dying again. Sounds terrible.
