This is a bit of a puzzler, something’s obviously going on, it really does struggle to tick over in these first stages, sometimes stopping and immediately starting itself again, before dying again. Sounds terrible.

OK....if your oil is 5w30, it's the right stuff....

Also, have you had the batteries properly load tested..??....a poorly front battery will cause all sorts of gremlins.

Do you know what code reader your garage used..?? Some of them have trouble with pending or historic codes.

I don’t think the batteries have been properly load tested, going to ask the garage to do that when it goes back after Xmas, but they seem quite lively. Not sure what diagnostic kit they have but it’s a modern garage with all the gear, but I have asked them to run it in to Ford dealer to get it on the ids this time. ( if I took it in myself no doubt I’d get a bill for about £900)

Give people a clue as to where you are situated, a member on here may be nearby with "ids"!

The front battery is the one to check.

Update , my local garage that changed the fuel valves and read the codes back in December had it back for a week while we weren’t using it last week, as shutting down after start up still.
This time oil and filter changed, and although my hd batteries were good, 2 new ones have been fitted.
On cold morning start up, problem still exactly same - fires up ok but ecu won’t allow it to run at high idle, just 800 to 850 then after 6 to 10 seconds it shuts itself off.
Starts again quick enough, still at low revs, and will either stop itself again or if not really freezing will continue to chug on.
Funnily enough I have 2 clues - the red oil light comes on a second before it shuts itself off, and if I turn it off after a few minutes ticking over and leave it for an hour, when I start it again it immediately goes to high idle 1000 rpm and then settles down as should.
Any help or suggestions from my transit owner friends would be gratefully appreciated, thankyou.

this sounds similar to my current problem that i posted in here, ive just changed all injectors, PRV and SCV and it is still having to fire 3 times to start up in cold weather. garage now is telling me they are thinking High pressure Pump (im guessing they mean high pressure fuel pump) not quite sure what im going to do but will be watching your thread. good luck

When it’s up and running you couldn’t wish for a better performing motor.
I’m steering clear of local Ford dealerships as I can never get further than a girl on the front desk. Busseys Transit Service centre in Norwich advised ‘take it to T C Harrison at Peterborough they may help’. Er when is a transit centre not a transit centre?
I need to find an IDS owner in Norfolk that won’t cost me an arm and a leg.

Had the same issue when I first bought my van when dead cold, ended up just being the wrong grade oil, I had "unknowingly" used 20w50 instead of 5w30, as soon as I changed the oil to the correct grade, the issue went away. I believe the latest PCM update helps with this also.
