belt/chain history

Postby ballihoo » Sun Dec 10, 2017 12:01 pm

hi
I recently got a 2014 125. apparently it was serviced before I brought it. the air filter looks pretty old and I don't trust that it was. I'm struggling to find any stamps or history to prove that it has been.
its coming up to 90000 and wondering when the the belts/chains need doing?
thanks!

For the mk6 it was 100000 for the belt and no set mileage for the chain but if you get a rattle on start up from cold then it’s time to think about doing it

don't really want to just start throwing money at it though.

I have no reason to think that it needs doing, just unsure if it has been/when it should be due

Sorry lads...neither the Mk6 or Mk7 have a belt...All Mk6 & Mk7 machines, petrol or diesel have cam chains....if the vehicle has been serviced properly and there's no fault with it, the chain should last quite a while.

There have been horror stories of some failing but I suspect it's rather rare.

The Aux belts just drive the engine's "external" accessories, alternator, water pump etc... has nothing to do with the cam chain, which is "internal".

The belts are usually an "on condition" item, replace when required, no specific mileage as such, some last many 10's of thousands of miles, some don't.

The cam chain should last quite a long time if the engine has been looked after and serviced regularly....the tensioners do fail sometimes but it is quite rare.
