Could be a few reasons ....................

1/ Oil needs changing

2/ Engine running too cold

3/ Too many short journeys

........... in no particular order

Oil cap mayonnaise

Postby Wesmuns » Tue Dec 12, 2017 8:42 pm

New member after some advice...

My Mk7 transit seems to be burning a lot of oil, went to top it up tonight and found this in the oil cap - has the head gone?
Done about 80k

Any advice very welcome!!

Thanks for reply mate,

I do a lot of short journeys, as I'm local builder normally working within my home town you think this could be prob?? I was thinking it may be water or fluid in the oil from somewhere??? Though I'm guessing.!!

Short journeys are your problem. The oil and engine are not getting up to temperature and working properly. Change oil and make sure you go for a long drive every now n then.

Take it for a 30 - 40 mile drive and once warm try drive it hard and look once back and see if it cleared

It won't clear
My mk7 did four x1 mile runs from cold (you know 1 mile stop ¾hour later start 1 mile repeat,) every morning
And a couple of 250-400 mile motorway runs a month and that always had a filler cap like that with mash potato in it from 70 to 180k :)

Thanks people.... appreciate the advise...
So if you where to hazard a guess where's my oil disappearing to every couple of months??? You think that's another factor to the problem?? Or unrelated??
I know for sure there's no leak. It has been parked on a drive or a garage and it would have left a mark.

Any white or blue-ish smoke while driving..?? If you're losing oil and she doesn't leak anywhere, it can only be going out the exhaust..! Is the tailpipe exit oily..??

The custard sludge you see is water/condensation mixing with the oil. As the others have mentioned, short journeys are the main cause, the oil doesn't get hot enough for long enough to burn off the water/condensation.

Thanks for the reply Knobblet...

Don't see any white or blue smoke on start up or outta the exhaust during driving. Will check the tail pipe tomorrow, but I don't think it's oily...

Think I shall get it in the garage for a service and check over...

Head gaskets are not common these days not like years ago, engines are stronger now than 20 years ago

Yeah....these engines rarely throw a head gasket....but it's not unheard of, anything is possible..!

Diesels burn oil anyway. But it probably just clinging to the existing gunk.
