Pre 2000: fitted to Mk3/4/5
Post 2000: If you ordered a heavy duty axle (higher plated mass) at the time of original order on a Mk6, it came fitted with a Type 53. (as far as I know)

You'll probably find the 5.14 ratio is a Mk5 axle....that's way before my time.
Springs are easy enough to check....measure the U-bolt hole centres against the ones on the Mk6.
Check the pinion flange is the same as the one on the Mk6 (number of bolt holes & pitch circle diameter).
Check the center line of the axle to the face of the pinion flange, then check the same measurement on the mk6, you'll then know if the prop wants lenghtened or shortened or is the same.
Cut the shock mountings of the Mk6 axle & weld them to the axle you've got.
I don't know if the diff housing is the same size....what's wrong with the axle that's on the Mk6?
I'd be questioning if an earlier axle is gonna be howling & want's a rebuild before fitting it.
