Van cutting out irregular and diplaying -----

Postby Leetgriffiths » Tue Dec 12, 2017 9:28 pm

Hi I have owned my van for nearly a year now it's a mk7. It started to cut out and shuddering while displaying ----- where my estimated fuel is displayed. This got worse over a few weeks some times it wouldn't start at all just cut out as soon as it started. Then other times it would go a few days before happening. It is that irregular it never happens when I took it into the garage

Since it started I have had new filters
Then a new key as mine was damaged in the wash and thought maybe it was the immobaliser

It can happen traveling at 60 or just idleing each time it happens the estimated millage disappears and shows -------

Has anyone had a similar problem and also can anyone tell me which relay controlls te fuel pump in this model

Thanks, lee

FWD or RWD..??

If RWD I'd suspect front battery is dying. You'll need to get both batteries properly load tested...if batteries prove OK you'll need to get the codes read.

+1 on having the batteries tested.

The Ignition switch on the end of the key barrel are a common failure that cause all manner of 'shits & fits' in the Instrument cluster. At around £16 from a ford dealer, it's worth having a spare....more a case of When rather than If it causes problems. :(
No Squire, not just any van....it has to be a Mk7 (VM.1) :D

I'll try that next iv just had the prv done and it seemed to fix the problem in till 100 miles later it nearly cut out again. Feels like fuel starvation. It's loads better than it was before and the prv was broke. Been told the scv is ok and didn't need changing so I'm guessing what ever made the prv blow is starting to cause issues again maybe??
I'm currently looking for someone local to blank the egr and do the software del so I can rule that out

Get both batteries tested, the prv fails due to software and scv being out.
Egr faults will bring up the eml at some point but the speedo ---- only really show when there's a power issue.

Get a genuine/new fuel filter on it too if it hasn't had 1 recently.

Then perhaps a pcm and learns etc.

There's loads on it on the forum tbh.:-)

Ps. Genuine valves needed.

Yea if had full service done. And prv with all software thinking I'm going to get the scv done even though was told it didn't need doing. Gonna pop for an alternator switch later just to rule it out

You mean ignition switch :?: :?

It would be worth checking the battery voltage when the engine is running, because if it's not charging the batteries correctly, then there lies your power issues

Yea sorry ignition switch. Would a power issue cause the prv to blow or would that be unrelated.

Mostly Unrelated....it's the SCV which usually causes the PRV to blow. The SCV controls the system pressure/flow....if there's too much pressure in the fuel rail/system the PRV will blow to save damage to the rest of the system, that's what it's there for. PRV= pressure relief valve.

I’ve changed the ignition switch, swapped out the batteries for a good matched pair.
Alternator charges under load at 14.5v....
I’ve even changed the ignition relay under the seat...

My van seemed ok after the prv so looks like that was the main problem but after 100 miles it tried to stall while driving then the tick over got bad when I got home and had it on idle. So I'm assuming maybe it's the scv I just hope it hasn't blown the prv again

Didn't the garage do a full and thorough test before handing the van back to you :?: :?:

When the prv blows it stops the fuel rail pressure building up to the correct amount and that's why when replacing it seems to run better but it is just waiting to blow again.

The correct procedure is to replace the svc and prv then optionally update the pcm software then perform a fuel pump learn and injector pilot learn.

While it isn't critical to do a pcm update it is recommended.

Also if cheap clone prv are fitted then it is likely that the pilot learn will fail and this will result in an engine management light coming on (powertrain warning lamp/ cog with! In the middle or engine malfunction message is displayed).
This causes a brown trouser stain to appear quite quickly afterward.

Also any faulty injectors or seals or leaks in the pipes can cause pilot learn to fail so it is recommended that an injector leak off test is done prior.
