Mk6 2.4 duratorq died on idle, won't restart p0404 p0409??

Postby james66 » Tue Dec 12, 2017 11:00 pm

Hi

Transit mk6 2.4 duragorq 90hp i think
Fired up this morn + left on idle to de-ice

10 mins later I went outside + it's dead, won't
Had a mate come round with snap on modis to see what's happening, tried to start it + almost flat battery now so it threw up loads of
cleared codes + 2 came up straight away p0404 + p0409 which relate to egr valve

Linked up to a jump + no start at all + no other codes coming up except the 2

In light of egr issue I squirted a bit of easy start in inlet + fired up but did not continue to run
I can't see that the egr would be causing this issue

anyone able to shed some light on this?

Cheers

Sounds like your fuel pump had died. N

This is what I had thought but would have thought it would have shown up a code?
If it was the mechanical side of the pump I'd have imagined it would have been a more progressive failure

DI pumps just die like that, one minute everything is fine and dandy next your stuck with a dead van, it most possibly be the electronic part of the pump, aye you would expect a dtc for it though, are the codes definitely egr related. N

I'd be checking the egr and associated parts. Could be stuck open. It's only supposed to open when on duty cycle, ie, whilst driving and within a certain rev range, not at dle, and not at WOT. (I believe)

That would certainly be cheaper than a fuel pump Ned. :)

Aye and it would eliminate the egr or the van will start and all will be good, Wonderbra. N

Like I would know anyway,
I just watched a vid on on egr codes and the causes thereof, the intro to it was "this is for the 2% who don't immediately rely on forum conjecture", (or something)

Anyway, I'm glad I'm not in the minority, no fun in that

Yes, to plank the egr get the blanking plate with the cut outs for the bolts instead of the one with just the holes, locate the egr (not sure where it is on 2.4) undo 2 x 8mm bolts (don't remove them) slip the blanking plate in and tighten the bolts, job done. N

its on the list to do today, if stuck open ill try knock it closed + see, fingers crossed its that simple + can then just order a blanking plate

yes with the cut out is definitely the one ill get as egr valve on 2.4 is at the back of the engine, will make it much easier
going to see if it stuck open today + knock it closed if is + see if it starts

cheers guys

That's disappointing, but it was cheap, always start cheap. There are wiser men on here than than I so I'm sure they can assist.
It's looking fuel related so you may be asked to spin off your filter to see if it's full of fuel, if it isn't then that's usually a problem, porous housing is an outside possibility.
There are at least three solenoids on the pump, one is a pump timing solenoid (like I recently had to renew, I have the same engine as you), but your symptoms don't point to that.
There is another one on the back of the pump, but I don't know what it does or the symptoms of a fail, and I presume the third will be a stop solenoid, which would be nice to think it would fail in the not shutting off mode, but maybe it can fail in the opposite extreme making it an easy enough fix, if diagnosed.

Over to the experts

I believe this is the pump you have, yes Rover also used them.

The metering solenoid fail symptoms match your issue, but get a second and third opinion before diving in.
