What Sort of Miles Can I Expect From 2.4 140PS?

Postby Tassiebloke » Thu Dec 14, 2017 1:28 am

Hi All,

Just got myself a Mk7 12 seater. It has 400K km on the clock, but has been regularly serviced since new as the service books show. It has been well maintained etc. Now the reason why they sold it (if you want to read how I came to be the owner, see newbie introduction  ) is because it was going over the Westgate Bridge here. It's a bit of a climb, and the driver said temp went into the red, oil light came on and then he shutdown immediately. It was towed off the bridge to the mechanic.

Long story, they sold it, I bought it, and it ended up being the oil cooler which I have now replaced. There were no obvious signs of any other damage other than a split heater hose. Thermostat wasn't opening, so replaced it. I checked the turbo on the cold side by spinning and checking thrust play. Rotates smoothly, essentially no movement horizontally or vertically, and no obvious FOD on the impellers. Despite being 'overheated', my OBD2 reader has not detected any DTC's. So I am cautiously optimistic about the condition. It idles well, but I haven't yet taken it for a drive, since it needs to be inspected for a Roadworthy Certificate which is needed to transfer the registration.

Now, to my question. What sort of life expectancy can I anticipate with such a relatively high mileage motor? (Yes, I know it all depends) but I have seen them here on Gumtree etc with over 650K km on the clock and still going.

If I should be thinking of getting hold of a lower km motor, I would try to put the 3.2 in it (yup, have read that whole thread through).

Thoughts anyone?

There might be life in the old girl yet, I've heard they can do at least 248548.53903 miles no bother.

Good luck finding a 3.2 5 pot...especially in Tassie, (if that's where you are..!)..! They're out there but very hard to find.

I have a Mk7 140 and although it only has 120k km so far, I plan/hope to get much more out of it.....Regular maintenance is the key.

They can be fitted into a normal 4cyl tranny with a bit of "creative" engineering..?

Have read that entire thread through...what an amazing job. There was someone here in Melbourne thinking of the same thing...wonder if he ended up doing it?

Ours is a motorhome with 240K on and going great a mate has one same and is at 870K also going good he says when he gets it to a million he will just keep it as a spare room have seen several with 6-700K so nothing is impossible things like starter motors vacuum pumps seem to go but the main components last if serviced right :D

There’s Transits on here with over 700k on them

The engine shuts down automatically in the event of overheat so no damage should have been done

Keep it well maintained and it will serve you well

Thanks for the replies. :)

It gives me confidence that when serviced regularly then they can last a long time.

Just a small update: I have taken it for a drive after flushing out the coolant system as best possible. When I returned and took off the oil cooler return hose, a lot of VERY grey water came out after I got it to normal operating temp, and the Morning Fresh has worked a treat. So much so, that it now has another lot in it flushing the remnants of the lovely grey sludge

Oil level hasn't dropped, engine seems to perform well, with no signs of smoke or sluggishness.

Fingers crossed.
