ignition switch issues on mk7

Postby gazzgazz » Thu Dec 14, 2017 12:14 pm

Hi All
Hoping you can help me with a issue i am having after replacing the ignition switch on my mk7 280 , i replaced the switch yesterday as i was having intermitant loss of speedo , rev counter and radio , i then had to turn the key and hold to get the ignition lights to come on prior to starting , so was advised to change the ignition switch.
The problem i have now is if i turn the key to the second stage all the light come on but then go out very quickly and dont come on at all when the key is turned round to the igniton stage , if the key is turned to the fire stage everything dies and there is a sound like something resetting behind the dash , any help would be hugely appreciated .
Cheers,
Gazz

Cheers for the replies , the van is running now I gave the battery a good charge and away she went , yeah I changed the ignition switch but that van has sat in this cold weather for 8 days without moving so that coupled with trying to get it started prior to changing the switch must have been enough to drain the battery , all good now though .
Cheers.

Hi gazzgazz, how did you get on with your van after this? I'm having a similar problem with my 58 plate MK7 that the radio cuts out and the rev counter drops to zero during driving. Drove two hours yesterday and it happened three times but corrected itself when I stopped and restarted twice and a third time itself without stopping. Decided to head back home just in case I was left without lights later on and it didn't happen once on the return trip. I was wondering if it is the alternator on the way out.

If you have two batteries, check the front one....they're known to fail regularly. Get both of them properly drop tested.

Yes what knobby said.

The front battery is for the ignition system while the rear is for the starter motor.
So when the front one fails it causes very strange things to happen.
