mk7 115ps - Hunting?

Postby enjoythistripp » Thu Dec 14, 2017 8:13 pm

Ok read a few posts regards to hunting and not sure if thats what she's doing. I recently had an engine reconditioned but the problem was there before and after. It was doing it a lot when cold less so when warm. I can only describe it as like the engine was throbbing instead of just ticking over, they was no cutting out just the engine would go vroom, miss a second vroom etc.. On my smileys this would be knackered injectors/mistimed but these mk7 gadgets are a little more technical.

Short story is reading here and other lesser forums led me to a PCM software update and the ford specialist advised if this dosen't work may need valves replacing and quoted around £450

The pcm was done and the mechanic advised initially no change. he also said it was reading an injector misalignment code or something similar saying someone had attempted this alignment and failed. (I forget the exact terms but he said it needed specific diagnostics to correctly do this or a snap on device). He suggested I first get the injectors tested as it could be a simple injector failure. he said if they was fine then they just need setting up (again from reading hunting posts I gather this is commonly known as learning them to the engine?) He also said after a little driving it may settle down.

Now onto the current situation, I drove a few miles and was sat for ages at a junction and it was ticking over like never before, shock horror, its fixed? Nooo, it's worse then ever now :(

So i gets a call and pulls over, as im chatting the engine vibrates/shudders a little, sound a little rough. Blipped the throttle went away. Drove another mile home and parked up and listened, goes from smooth running at 850ish rpm, shudders and randomly shoots upto 2000rpm then back to idle as if I have pressed the throttle. Im not sure if the pcm update has caused this or if the garage has done something to gain the work? id like to think there an honest garage with great reviews over decades!

Sorry for the long rant. Ring any bells? what would you do next? Im planning on the injector test first? Not got bucket loads of dollar so want to get it right, albeit I paid a fair whack for it so also want it done right. Thanks in advance

Sounds like the "all too common" PRV & SCV valves issue, did your mechanic do the "learns" after the PCM update.?? One would assume if the engine was "reconditioned", the injectors would have at least been checked/inspected....If not you may need to do an injector leak-off check to see if the injectors are still ok, then do the normal learns.

If someone has "attempted" to do the learns and it has failed to complete successfully three times, she may go into "Limp Mode".

If your garage/mechanic knows anything about Mk7 transits, they would know this would be required. IDS or Forscan is your friend.

The garage who did the pcm suggested the same, leak off tests first, then they will do the learns if all ok.

Fair enough, "if" the injectors prove ok, she may need a new SCV & PRV, then a set of learns should see you out of trouble. Very common on Euro-IV Mk7's.

Injectors have been reconditioned and re-coded in and have had no issues and in 2000 miles. Had a fuel starvation problem this evening the AA diagnosed a injector malfunction so my question is if I have a faulty injector and have them all reconditioned would this cure the faulty injector.
