Check under the drivers seat for 2 batteries, the front 1 might be flat/dead, test them both and try recharging the front 1. Alternatively the ignition switch is a common failing point.

Main battery fuses are in the seat base fusebox but not likely to have gone.

I have a Mk6. There is another fuse panel under the dash panel near the other end of the dash. Failing that there may be a bad earth connection behind the dash.

Hi Chris, the mk6 and mk7 are completely different setup.

will the "front battery" recharge naturally while driving for a few hours?

Will do but if it is empty then it could be buggered, usually you don't have the flat rear 1 and the van starts etc but you get the same symptoms because the front battery hasn't got enough power to operate the bcm fully :-(

Recharge both batteries and if you still have the symptoms then get them voltage drop tested.
:-)

Cold weather affects batteries and it's never good to flatten them completely, although new types of battery and new technology is making them better.
