Easiest way to get to top strut bolts MK6 2.0 fwd swb O/S

Postby Jason _Transit » Fri Dec 15, 2017 9:01 pm

I need to change the O/S strut and spring on my Mk6 2.0 fwd swb, when I tried to get to the top bolts inside the cab it seems really difficult to get to and cant see how I would get a socket in there to undo them.

Whats the easiest way to get to those top bolts?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks.

Take out the tray inside the glove box and also the top dash cover for light also on refitting sit a socket that passes through the hole in the body on top of the shocky then you just need to line up the threads

O/S is drivers side, so presuming it's RHD this means no glovebox work around.
I've only done the N/S on a FWD and it simply needed the cutting of a hatch in the rubber carpet to access the bolts, without the need to disturb the glovebox.
You will definitely need a helping hand putting the strut back on, unless you are a freak of nature :!:

Yes, good tip on fitting a socket on the centre nut to align, helped me.

Are they only 10mm :?:

I'd of guessed at minimum 13mm. :|

Jumbo 57, Need to edit my post it is near side.

I was taught O/S and drivers side referring to left or right hand drive but now know it relates to kerbside not the drivers position, you learn something new every day.

My pain in the ass is the glove box and the carpet.

The tip for using the socket to align will help a lot, unfortunately dont have the joy of the ratchet spanners.

Thanks for the tips.

Remove the inner glove box then you can get the socket in and see what your doing. And you will need to cut the carpet to access the nuts. N

Thanks for the help lads.

My own fault this, swapping 15 inch wheels for 16 inch with the biggest tyres you can fit was probably a bad idea lol looks well but bad for other parts.

I like the small Landrover wheels but I am sure would also cause me problems.

Please do and report back, I know they don't do a lot of work but 10mm just seems so, well, dainty. :)

They are 13mm but I find 1/2 inch fits better as it's a tight fit

The studs on the top mount are 8 mil which is usually a 13 mil nut but ford and Cummings do odd sized nuts they make them so that they have their own flat washer built in to the nut and for some applications can have teeth on the underside a act as self locking nut so with this type of nut the spanner size is 1 mil smaller this also makes easy to use different spanner’s on them .
Hear is a list of what works
12ml =half inch a/f
14 ml=quarter whitworth
18mil=three eighth whitworth
That’s all a can remember off the top of my head but as you go up the size range it works just the same also using different spanner ranges all works on pipe nuts
