ford transit 2004 sliding door lock

Hi everyone I just bought the above van which is in quite good condition for its age I have a problem with the sliding door seems a common thing from the posts I have read It would not open from outside so I opened it internally dismantled it to have a look and it was out of position for opening I refitted it and now it will open easily the problem now is it does not want to lock unless I pull the internal cable backwards,Is this a case of the cable being over stretched or the spring in the handle being set in the wrong position I am not sure that is why I am asking
