Panic - IDS PCM Update gone wrong!

Postby gav_herts » Tue Dec 19, 2017 3:58 pm

Hi all.
My 2008 2.2 Transit and myself are miles from home.
Having problems with the accelerator pedal and hunting / stalling.
Plugged into IDS and tried a PCM update.
Got the following message: "The diagnostic tester is unable to communicate with the module".
Now van will not start.
Battery charged and left on charge while I tried update again. Same message.
What can I do to get van running again?
Thanks in advance.

Why did you try pcm update?

What codes did you get when first plugged in?
What codes were left or returned once codes were cleared?

Hi, thanks for reply.
The initial codes were:
P068A: 00-28-PCM
P2265: 64-28-PCM
I deleted these and the last check only came up with one:
P0602: 55-FF-PCM

I tried the update, as I had to recently re-install IDS onto laptop and thought I'd use the latest version!

The first two are posibly the result of a failed PCM update ?
P068a is PCM power relay de-energised too early
P0602 is programing error from what I can see.

P2265 is water in Fuel sensor.

Go into module programming and do restore from backup hopefully it's stored your original upload and you'll get away with downloading that. If not you may have to download the asbuilt file and restore from that then do cal update if rqrd iirc?

Cheers Karl.
The laptop was connected to the internet via my phone. I assumed that because I was offered the newer update, that the internet connection was not the problem.

Thanks Airthies.
The water in fuel sensor shows up every time. My mechanic (who is miles away!) has checked this out and can't find a fault.

The last PCM update would have been performed by the mechanic, although he never mentioned it failing.

In module programming, I do not have the option to restore (in any way, shape of form).
Regarding the asbuilt file, there is a .omf file in the IDS Apps folder on the laptop hard drive.
There are also 20x TML files in the IDS XML folder.
Are any of those useable?

Having had a chance to google, I have also read a procedure to download from the motorcraft website. However, there is no option to select UK from the list of locations. In fact, there are no European countries listed!

P0602 Powertrain Control Module Programming Error

PCM has been corrupted. There's no "restore" option on IDS :(

Hi Paul,
Would Airthies suggestion of using an asbuilt file work?

As built file ends with .ab

See example below.

You can trick IDS into thinking PCM is blank. Then reprogram using as build data file or manually entering HEX code.
Although, to do this IDS need to communicate with PCM.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I thought you tried an update?
If you did and it failed it could of corrupted the pcm in the process....

Best option I think as paul2012 suggests is to try to use asbuilt file and fool IDS into thinking pcm is new and blank.

What version of IDS are you running? You only need v86.00 or v86.04 for your van.

Right, I've found the right motorcraft site, entered VIN and got a .ab file (downloaded and saved to laptop desktop.
I've also found Loots instructions:

Turn internet connection off, save asbuilt file to the desktop then run ids and go to restore the asbuilt, it will see no internet then ask you to find the file, go to where it is and run it. Job done. Make sure you have power at the batteries :-)

I can but try!

I did try an update this morning, which has led to the problem. I was just clarifying (or not) that an update was performed previously.
I guess that info isn't required!

Running v86.04 as per Loot's download.
Running with the IDS patch 86 & extended programming.
