Extend Steering Wheel/Colum / Adjust Steering Rack

Postby Ashbeck » Mon Jan 01, 2018 12:06 am

This is going to sound insane but this being and older van maybe someone has tried it.

The company I work for provided me a van at a cost of £200 a week. The van in question was a new Vauxhall Vivaro. I racked up 20,000 miles in 3 months and I became a custom to it, it was perfectly adjusted to my driving style, body size/height, everything.

Last week I purchased my 2009 Transit to replace it, now at first, I realized immediately the driving position was very different but that could have just been a memory effect of me being used to the other van. However after the first day I was getting extremely tired and after adjusting everything possible I realized the steering wheel was way to far away from my body and I had to stretch my arms straight to bring them to the 10/2 position, and came to the realization that it is NON ADJUSTABLE. By the 5th day I was knackered doing 400 miles a day, I constantly found myself leaning forward to get a good grip of the wheel as I took a corner, or made a maneuver.

Is there anyway to adjust the steering/modify it/replace the rack with a longer one, etc etc etc?

Please don't ask me to pull the seat forward, I have long-ish legs. That would be even more uncomfortable.

Any suggestions? I would really like to resolve this ASAP as after the Christmas/news years break I'll be driving even longer and I don't think I would be able to bare it to be honest.

Thanks!

Not sure but I think a adjustable stearing column was an optional on mk7 you maybe able to get one from a breakers but if not you could try the Motorsport route they have extension on the stearing column but you’d loose the air bag and any switch’s on the standard wheel

Thank you thank you thank you!

Are you sure an option existed? As I've googled it for days and nothing was showing at all. If so I will call every breaker in the country haha!

Secondly was it push/pull or just up and down?

Thanks again man!

Ford list just one column for rhd and one for lhd so I think your stuck.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

 probably be better if I were to go hands on
I'll get my lube :D
transits are designed to accommodate an "average " human body
So if your having difficulties you may be lacking in some departments
You might be able to get little prosthetic arm extenders to help you reach the wheel?
My aunt Ogden was very wee
Very very wee she used to get a new mini every year. real minis not this Nazi sh*t
She had to put a cushion on the seat to see over the steering wheel and blocks on the pedals so her little legs could reach them :D
Hth
Nice chat
Bye

I have the same issue and would like an adjustable column. It is shown in the handbook but not fitted to mine either. I`m going to try and find out whats needed to convert it......
