MK6 2.4 TDDI output test / Turbo cartridge

Postby wicklabilly » Wed Jan 03, 2018 8:56 pm

Hello is it possible to test/check the turbo on a MK6 using plug in diagnostics whilst on a test drive?

Also noticed some oil in the inter cooler pipe, would this point towards the turbo being worn and requiring an overhaul by fitting a new turbo cartridge?

thanks in advance. :D

Oil in the intercooler normally is crankcase vapour condencing as it enters the intake system after the filter but before the turbo
That doesn't mean the turbo not shot, But!!! I'd expect other faults & symptoms that would be more obvious if the turbo's failed.

Yes its checkable. Cheapest option is forscan. Software is free and is compatible with most cheap elm327 cables.
There are some higher speed cables on eBay for forscan about £17 which are supposed to be better.
Use forscan to log manifold pressure while driving.
Need to be heavy footed to get full boost.
Get into 2nd or 3rd at 1,500 rpm and boot down until at least 3,000rpm. Turbo should be giving it all by then, if not you have a manifold leak or nackered turbo.

Or a dirty map sensor is another possibility if you get low boost on laptop

And of course we all get an assistant to either drive or watch the live data for us.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

No. Press record before you set off. Look when you get home. I do it quite often

I fitted a turbo "boost" gauge and you can see at a glance what is going on turbo wise.

Actually I fitted a bank of three gauges to my beast...a voltmeter, turbo boost and oil pressure...makes life so much easier to quickly diagnose any engine illness, add that to IDS or Forscan and I'm covered.

If it's any help, once spooled up i.e. as soon as it started to pull properly, my Mk6 120 would show full boost (1.2Bar) and drop back to ~ 0.6Bar at cruise.

Yours may show a lower figure if a lower PS van, plus I increased mine from 1Bar max. When it split the manifold it would only show just under 1Bar.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll but one of those elms cables and download the software and give it a go.

Jim my truck is a MK6 120 too.

Silly question but should i locate and clean the MAP sensor anyway? where abouts is it?

Cheers everyone.

MAP is the flat box up under the scuttle, feed pipe runs back to the EGV valve body.

Ok thanks. I have blanked the EGR though. I'll locate and clean it.
