2.2 tdci keeps cutting out, what else could it be???

Postby Gaz1157 » Mon Jan 08, 2018 12:06 pm

Hi all

Sorry for the essay but I’m trying my hardest trying to find out more about this pissing van and it’s faults!!
Please help

This van has been an ongoing problem for a couple of weeks now, I’m almost ready for this dysfunctional relationship to end if I can’t solve this cutting out problem.

It’s a 57-reg 2.2 tdci LWB FWD transit and the trouble started before Xmas with it sometimes not turning over, when it wouldn’t start the glow plug coil light wouldn’t illuminate on the dash... and then when the light appeared it would start no problem.

It then escalated to randomly cutting out whilst stationary at traffic lights or in slow moving traffic.

Then it started cutting out whilst travelling at speed and at first came straight back to life when it did cut out, nowadays though there’s a good couple of seconds before it comes back to life.
What I did notice though was that
JUST AS THE VAN WAS CUTTING OUT, there was a loud clunk/click from the relay under the seat and then it’d click again as the van came back to life.
Faulty relay maybe?

1.) It was suggested I should start with the charging rate of the batteries and wether they are charging equally under load

Turns out they are both charging great at 14.5v.

2.) The ignition switch was also suggested so I changed that

No change, problem still exists

3.) The next thing that was suggested was the ignition relay, I have another coming sometime this week which fingers crossed solves the problem

But my question is this....
What else could it possibly be if it’s not the relay and which route should I take?

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Regards
Gary

My 2.2tdci engined citroen relay was stalling and cutting out when changing down for roundabout or junction and did not show any fault codes but running with scanner fuel pressure was fluctuating so fitted a new pressure regulator which has cured the problem

So what/where might this "fuel pressure regulator" be then..??

They have an SCV, (Suction Control Valve), and a PRV, (Pressure Relief Valve).

He's talking about a Citroen, LKR.

The French do it their own way, which is nice.

Well after removing the batteries I found that they weren’t equally matched in capacity and charge rate etc...

I changed them for a slightly more powerful matching pair of batteries and on the face of it it seems to have solved the problem regarding the non-starting fault where if the glow plug light didn’t illuminate then the van wouldn’t even turn over!
Now since changing the batteries I have a glow plug light and it starts every time.

Just needs a bit of a drive to see if it still cuts out or not.

Hi gaz
Talking to a guy last night who had exactly same problem ; apparently it’s the fuel sensor

That sounds promising.

The batteries I thought solved the glow plug light problem.... turns out it didn’t.
I changed the relay today and so far it hasn’t cut out whilst I’ve been driving it (only done about 3miles) so fingers crossed that helps

I’m not holding out much hope though so I’ll look into the fuel sensor.
Where is it located, any ideas?

Fuel sensor..?? There's a fuel temp/pressure sensor on the end of the fuel rail opposite the PRV....but they rarely fail. Anything is possible though.

Well a pair of batteries, an ignition relay and an ignition switch hasn’t solved the problem so far...
No codes are showing on my mates snap on computer but I am awaiting on a friend with the ford management computer to plug into it.

We shall see....

I'm thinking it might be the PRV dead or dying..
