Mk7 awd 2.4 vs 2.2 which one?

Postby TheSupremeAuthority » Fri Jan 12, 2018 10:31 pm

I'm looking at getting an awd transit once I've sold the RS6, but the dark blue I like only seems to have the 2.2 rather than the 2.4 I prefer, which only come in the light blue. Would be using it to mainly tow my track car and the missus' horse box. But would be my only vehicle so was looking at a swb.

Are the 2.2s any good in the mk7 compared to the 2.4s. After driving my new mk8 dropside (2.2 125 3.31 diff) compared to the old mk7 (2.4 115 4.27 diff) the 2.2 doesn't seem to cope as well as the 2.4 (both carrying the same weight) (could just be down to different diffs)

Thanks, Adam

The awd system isn't a proper 4x4 the 4x4 system kicks in like traction control. I'd say your better off going for a rwd t330 they have the load rating most the rac vans were these.

The 2.4 was discontinued later in the Mk7's run towards 2012...anything after that was probably 2.2 and Euro-V... till 2014 when the Mk8 was introduced.

The "AWD" Tranny's are quite rare too...I've not driven an AWD so I shouldn't comment.

I would not get a swb for towing.

I suspect a swb rwd is also a rare beast.

I tow with my mk7 115 350 on a 3.73 diff and have not had a problem either getting it moving or cruising on fast roads.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

I have a 2013 awd high top mwb. With a set of bf goodridge AT. As stated already, it’s not a serious 4x4 but it is surprisingly capable.
