Today's technical queries

Postby Sanemancured » Sun Jan 14, 2018 4:00 pm

Hiya all

I've spent a while today checking over my new to me 2004 Mk6 Campervan. It's LWB Hi top with a 90 bhp engine. It's done less than 22,000 miles and is pretty sound. 2.4 TDDi.

I've a couple of technical questions if anyone can help. Nothing major.

I checked the wheels and tyres, pressures were set to 35psi all round and it should be 67 rear 47 front so that was sorted. Tyres are all good and the spare was lowered so I know what to do when I need to. The clamp was rusty and I smeared it with grease. The van is going in for a full Waxoyl next month. 5 balance weights came off with the wheel embellishers so thats a job to get done this week, bloody annoying really. The nuts aren't mega tight now.

I didn't check the levels in the diff and gearbox, just that there were no leaks. There was a little dark oil under the bell housing so I've a bit of a crankshaft oil seal weep methinks. Not overly worried at the moment.

The fuel filter checker seemed a little odd. I pushed the yellow button for 3 seconds and nothing much seemed to happen. No click and the yellow portion moved a millimetre or two into the clear bit and then returned. I was pushing the button fairly hard too. I ran the engine at 4k rpm for 5 seconds and then checked the indicator that hadn't moved and was still well in the green. I'm following the Haynes manual but something doesn't seem right.....

I went to drain the fuel filter water trap and nothing came out of the tube connection on the fitting. I loosened the drain fitting right off, all the way and a little clean full came into my hand. Again not what I expected....

I had a look at the exhaust inlet to the EGR and I suspect that a EGR blank has already been fitted. I think I can see the blank with a slotted bolt hole. I've attached a photo and wonder if I'm right, or wrong.

I've going away next weekend for an inaugural trip. I'll do an oil and filter change before we go. This is our first campervan and the trip is the wife's 60th treat :)

I hope you've got them tight enough.
Correct torque is 200nm or 148 lbft, which a lot of people would think is very tight.

If you anxious about the fuel filter then just fit a new one. The indicators are not brilliant and modern fuel in the UK is fairly clean and dry.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

I didn't bother torquing them as they'll all be off again this week for balancing

Given the low miles and signs of regular maintenance and also checking again to see how the thing works I'm sure the filter is okay.

If you think that the plate with the turned edges is a blank then it isn't, it's simply a load spreading c clamp.

Nope I'm looking at what appears to be a plate just this side of it. I'll whip it off and have a look.

ok,

In order from right to left,

Said clamp
Egr exhaust supply pipe flange (c. 4mm-6mm)
gasket. SINGLE skin (c. 0.3mm)
Egr alloy housing body

Blanks usually no more than sheet steel (1.8-2.0mm)
If you can't see anything other than the gasket then you probably have a properly functioning EGR.

Of course you may have a blank, ex. flange is 2 X 10mm nuts.

Yeah, gasket is wafer thin stainless, blank may be same,
only one way to be sure.

You look hell of a familiar if that's your photo, any connection with my neck of the woods?
I'm drawing a hard hat on you now, and maybe a welders cap!!!

The EGR wasn't blanked after all. It is now.

Just remember from May this year, MOT inspection stations will be checking for this...possible heavy fines if caught.
