Adding locks with keyholes to Mk6

Postby Bewick » Mon Jan 15, 2018 3:33 pm

Hi,

I sometimes disconnect my starter battery if the van will be sitting still for a long time to protect against parasitic drain. Obviously the central locking doesn't work while the battery is disconnected, but I do still need to get in and out of the sliding and rear doors. On Ebat I've found a Mk6 lock set which actually has keyholes for the sliding and rear doors, which would presumably mean I can mechanically lock and unlock these doors while the battery is disconnected.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-New-Fo ... 1438.l2649

My question is, can these be fitted 'on top of' the central locking? Obviously my van wan't built with these keyholes so is it possible to fit them without faffing about with the central locking as well?

Also, does anyone know where in the Bristol area I could get these fitted? I've tried contacting a few auto locksmiths but they haven't got back to me, so I wanted to check it's even possible before chasing it up.

Thank in advance.

Just as an alternative to the faff of fitting extra locks, why not fit a second battery in parallel, and just disconnect the earth on one of them when you lay it up :?:

You could fit something like this,

Then you can leave the rear of the van unlocked and lock it with them. N

I do actually have a leisure battery which is connected in parallel while I'm driving and disconnected when I'm parked, could I use this? How would that work?

At the moment I just disconnect the negative from the starter battery and that knocks out the central locking along with everything else. I was wondering about trying to wire the central locking to the leisure battery but I don't know how much of a palaver that would be. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I did have a little look at those, they're quite a bit more expensive but might be easier to fit. The concern I have is that because I use the van as a camper I don't want anyone on the outside to be able to slide a bolt across and trap me in! I don't know if this would be an issue with these locks?

If you have a 13 pin tow plug you can just hook up a battery charger to that and top up the battery once a month or so. Really handy mod you can do.
