A very specific electrical issue

Postby Karst » Wed Jan 17, 2018 9:19 pm

Hi Folks,

I've got a new issue on my 2000 X-reg Mk6. It's a weird electrical phantom. I'm going to describe what happens... Is this something anybody has experienced with a straight-to fix, or is it just a good old-fashioned pig that I will have spend hours or many pounds on??.....

THIS ONLY HAPPENS WITH EITHER SIDE LIGHTS OR HEADLIGHTS ON...

When I indicate LEFT, the little fog light indicator next to the headlight dial FLASHES ON AND OFF WITH THE INDICATOR.

When I am indicating LEFT and apply the brakes, the indicator speeds up to double speed.

The flashing of the fog indicator light becomes LESS PRONOUNCED when I apply the brakes.

Whilst NOT INDICATING, if I apply the brakes, the fog light indicator comes on.

Any offers??

I would be checking the rear lights especially the plug on the top, its not uncommon for damp to get in them and rust the plug causing disco lights  N

Have a check of your rear light clusters/looms, the connectors often corrode and cause all sorts of gremlins with bad earths etc..pretty common. Do you have a trailer plug fitted?? If so, they can also give grief.

As above, the earth to the rear light clusters has become faulty, very, very common on the mk6 transits. The black plug on he top will be either green with corrosion on some or all pins, rusty, or actually slightly melted. I usually end up drilling through the cluster earth track, running a small wire straight in through the hole and soldering it to the track, ten take it up and splice it to the earth in the loom going to the plug, effectively bypassing the plug and its poor connections. must have done this 100 or more times in the last few years.

Trailer wiring/towbar sockets are another place this can occur.

I had it on my last van whenever I was towing the trailer, the trailer was fine on my Jeep so it was damp in the towing socket of the Transit.
It was a very common problem maybe 25 to 30 years ago on lots of older cars, many times you would follow a car and when he indicated to turn and brake at the same time all the lamps in the cluster would flash and flicker, I used to run a second earthing wire to sort the issue out, mind you , lighting clusters were easier to work with then and less electronics in the cars.

Thankfully, I have no trailer or tow bar sockets.
