New to transits? Is mine functioning ok?

Postby Sunni » Sat Jan 20, 2018 1:04 pm

Hi all. Ive just bought my firsr transit to do house clearances with. So im not sure what is a normal performance or what isnt?? So need your advice.

Ive just spent £3000 on a 54 plate 90 T350. Twin wheel with tail lift. 12months mot, no advisories, and fairly clean mot history. Genuine 151,000 on the clock. I took it for a test drive around the town, drove superb, gears, engine sounds normal, no smoke, everything seemed great, until i hit the motorway. It will not go above 70, even down hill, which is fine but it seemed to take forever to get to 70? Then when i came to a big hill it struggled to climb it sitting at 30 max, i just watched the speed drop, put it in 2nd and it screams so back to 3rd and 25mph!!? On a gradual incline she struggles to go above 45/50mph. Just seems a bit gutless. As a newbie i thought i should ask people with transit knowledge. Many thanks, sunni

Just a thought, it is quite common that some vans have a 70mph speed limiter fitted, not sure whether these work on actual speed or maybe revs in each gear.
Maybe someone with more know how will add to this.

Speed limiters work on road speed, not engine speed.

Give a full service, all filters etc
Get someone to plug it in and read the fault codes
Strip and clean the inlet manifold

All of the above will help ensure it runs to the best of its ability

but where can you drive legally above 70 at least you will never get done for speeding on the motorway
carnt see the point in people wanting more speed they will only get fined when court my transit
plods very nicely at 70 mph on the motorway
you get people passing you going like a bat out of hell 20 / 30 miles down the road you catch up
to them and your just plodding along and lets face it speed leads to road rage

Plodders need shot.
People have places to be, and behind plodders is not a pleasure. :!:
