The Engine won't Start?

Postby Kirsty.B » Sat Jan 20, 2018 1:30 pm

Hello.
The van has been off the road during the conversion process.
I bought a new battery and tried to start it. It caught a couple of times then stopped. Now it just turns and nothing happens. Can anyone reccommend something to do?

Giving us a bit more information would be a good starting point.

Is it a mk6 or mk7 ?
What year is it ?
Is it petrol or diesel ?

Does it have one battery or two, yes you said you replaced one but does it have a second beside it.

Is there fuel in it ?

mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Hello. Thank you for replying.
It's a mk7. It has two batteries under the drivers seat and it's a diesel with plenty in it.
Date of first registration Nov 2006.

OK, sorry for the crystal ball but not all mk6 or mk7 transits are the same.

The two batteries under the seat might be significant.

When you turn on the ignition do all the dash lights come on briefly?
Does anything funny happen to the lights when you engage the starter motor ?

If the van has bee standing for some time it is possible the fuel has drained back to the tank.
If this happens the computer that runs the engine will not attempt to start the engine until fuel pressure returns.
The check for this is with a diagnostics computer, but a good indicator is to remove the fuel filter and see if it is full of fuel. If it is not then fill it to the brim with fuel and refit. If the filter is more than a year old then fit a new one, again filling it the the brim with fuel first.

i have a ford transit 2 litre 2002 SWB i have had the injectors recond, new timing chain, some new lifters and a injector pump from Euro because my last pump failed.
thats was 18 months ago and drives extremely well no smoke and went through the mot on Thursday with no problems, on Friday it refused to start and when checked it has come up with the code 1608 nothing else just that code, is it a wiring issue or is the pump knackered again i have driven only 5000 miles since the pump was fitted and it is now just out of warranty.

P1608 Internal ECM Malfunction, no idea what that means but if it was pump/injector related I would expect to see p1554 &p 1654 or something like that. N

It's not very polite to hijack someone elses thread.

Clear any codes.
Make sure your battery is fully charged and that all the wiring connections are clean.
Then check for codes before trying to start it.
If the P1608 code has vanished then it's possibly just a low volts error at the pump.

Thanks for the feedback, too many threads just stop after some advise has been offered and we never know what happened next.

Was if the fuel filter ?

It's bad manners not to say thank you, and i have a feeling i'll be here a lot as i have much to learn!
When i come back, should i continue to ask my questions on this thread, or should i start a new one for every problem?
Yes, it was the fuel filter. :D

Start a new thread for any new problem.

If you've used the search then say so, we know it's possible to miss things or search for the wrong words.
Several people have asked recently where to find the fuses for the central locking, a search would have found previous threads asking the same and the faq thread.

If you go to the user control panel for your forum account, select profile and then the signature tab you could put in your van detail.
There are some differences between vans that can be quite important.

The important info is Mk6 or Mk7, the year built and whether it is front or rear wheel drive.
