Transit 2010 2198cc 85T 280S tapping noise-please advise

Postby Wayne87 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 12:58 pm

Hi Guys,
Bought this off a mate a month ago, constant tapping noise coming from engine, he was told it was the Rocker arm bearing that needed replacing. The faster you go the quieter the tapping, apparently.
Local Mechanic put through mot for me, had to top oil up as was low, approx 2.25L, tapping stopped completely for a few minutes then came back.
Removed rocker arm assembly, no obvious fault found, no damage no wear to arms etc. suspecting Hydraulic lifters, but not 100%
injectors are different indicating that two have been replaced at some stage.
No ther signs, no smoke, drives lovely apart from tapping noise.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Apologies for the delay, didn’t realise I had any replies, New guy!!

The injector clamps are tight.

Noise is not like the video, it’s more of a loud tapping noise coming from the top end.

Any other ideas?

That's what I'm thinking.

Engine in that vid, load tapping appeared to be top end & not a bottom end knock.
Unfortunately turned out to be blown/cracked piston in cylinder 4 :(

Hey guys,

Right, so you guys are definitely on the right track, noise is coming from cylinder 4, we are suspecting a broken/cracked piston as you say. Is there anyway to confirm this other than stripping engine down?
What cost are we talking to strip down, rebuild piston, reassemble etc?
Would a compression test confirm a cracked piston or is that a waste of time?
Thanks
