Prop bearing

Postby Honda415 » Sun Feb 04, 2018 1:29 pm

Thought i would start my long list of jobs by doing what i thought was going to be easy!!! Nope been on it all morning! Ive cut the old bearing away completely but i cannot for love nor money get the uj yoke off of the end of the prop so i can slide the new bearing on. I cant get a puller on it because i cant get the uj circlips out. To push on the shaft. I am beating it to death with hammer and chisel and even winding out the yoke bolt against a spacer to liad it up and get it to shift with no luck. Short of buying myself a bottle of gas with a decent blow torch any ideas??

theres a -i think 13mm- bolt in the middle of the propshaft holding the uj on. loosen it about 4 or 5 turns then push/poke the retaining clip out, it looks like the letter u/n. no need to take the bolt out. then hit the uj out remembering to mark it and the prob for balance when youre sticking it back together. a normal 13mm open spanner will loosen the bolt

Its a 17mm on mine its loose and been using it against it the uj itself to try and jack the yoke/flange off but still wont work. Had enough for the day ordered a propane blow torch to see if i can heat it up more than my little hand held canister will. Then more hammering

Haha the dreaded prop bearings. I'm not even joking its one of the most piss taking jobs I've ever encountered. I was beating the living death out of it for three days with heat on it. Went through a litre of penetrating fluid from soaking it and going back to it.

Had it held in the vice, blow torch heating it up but trying not to burn out the UJ's. Tonnes of oil. I nearly cried a tear of joy when it cracked the first mm and I knew I was winning.

What a joke! Tackled it one Sunday before work and ended up missing 3 days graft :x

Bigger hammer  Good luck

Did mine recently, an absolute c*nt of a job, same as you, seized on.
I used my plumbers torch with the regular gas, which is rated at 'pants' for this kind of job, you may wish to try MAP gas, which I believe is much hotter burning.
10 minutes of heating is mind numbing to undertake, but necessary because everything is a cold sink.
It will release eventually, and I too had to hit the beejesus out of the yoke as well as using the bolt as a press.

Wire brush the splines and apply plenty copperslip on it when you refit, and it's important to renew the locking tab washer, I got a kit of 2 new bolts, 2 new horseshoe spacers and 2 new tab washers for £14 on ebay,

Stealer wanted £20 for 1 bolt and 1 washer.

Well update on the prop bearing ended up taking prop off completely and visiting an old farming friend using the aceteylene and lots of hammering for over an hour to get the flange off! So its all seperated pending re-dressing of flange etc so can be re-assembled and fitted. Thanks for all the advice so far!

if you have to split your prop shaft mark it first on both surfaces where it splits so when you put it back together it goes back exactly as it was or if you put it back together with out marking it you have just unbalanced your prop shaft

Prop finally rebuilt with plenty of copper slip on the bearing and splined shaft. All together and back on ready for the other to fail! Lol
