AWD 2011 2.4 Transit

Postby JockRMsport » Mon Feb 05, 2018 10:17 pm

Bought an AWD transit last year just went through MOT but is making a strange noise from somewhere, also the noise does not last it just seems to go away then comes back if you are driving slow into a town, parking or pulling away slowly drove 40 + miles today like I said it just seems to come and go at random, have just had the front discs replaced about 2 months ago I bought a Haynes manual but they do not really tell you anything about the AWD, I am presuming that Ford did not do the conversion themselves, it is an ex waterboard van so I am sure it has had a hard life 138K on the clock, it drives really well on dual carriageways motorways towing car trailer no problems there at all, croft and mallory last year, the noise is quite harsh when it is there and deep whine like differential/gearbox bearings type of noise very unsure to pinpoint anybody with any ideas to what it might be would be appreciated ??

It's not a "conversion"...Ford did produce the AWD machines from the factory, although they are quite rare...especially here in Aus...TBH, I've not seen one in person. :?

A wheel bearing possibly dying maybe..??

What's the difference between tyre wear from front and rear tyres have seen them "winding up" because of the difference in rolling circumference

If it's a Haldex AWD like the Freelanders then you might like to to google.

Don't they have a viscous coupling or clutch in the transfer case somewhere..??

The real old Subaru 4WD's used to "Wind up" too, in reverse only for some silly reason...!

Have had front left wheel bearing replaced as the guy from the garage drove it himself and said that was what it was picked the van up and by the time I got home there was the noise again possibly slightly different, today drove it for about twenty miles and it only seems to make a noise when going slow or that is when you hear it at its best or worst still very confused about the whole thing have tried looking for something myself but to no avail.

Does the noise happen whilst going in a straight line at slow speed, or just when turning or going around bends at slow speeds?

If it doesn't happen when you're going in a straight line then that points to an issue with your centre differential (or viscous coupling - not sure how these AWD vans were built).

The centre diff allows the front wheels to spin at a different speed to the rear wheels (exactly like the rear diff allows the left wheel to rotate at a different speed to the right wheel). If there is something wrong with the centre diff it's likely to only make noises when the front wheels are trying to turn at a significantly different speed to the back wheels (ie turning a corner or going round a sharp bend at low speed).

Took van out on saturday did about 10 miles and only got the noise once going downhill about 30mph the rest of the time nothing and it is a lot of corners and sharp slow bends ?? out yesterday took a 90 left away from a junction when I straightened up the noise was there but it does go away then took a 90 right and no noise when I straightened up.
