DPF sooted up, has anyone had one cleaned?

Postby shovelheadrob » Sat Feb 10, 2018 9:18 pm

2012 155ps. A few weeks ago a message popped up "engine malfunction" no codes for a while then it set a code for dpf sooted up, can't remember the specific code, had a forced regen done at the dealer. They said that it may well come back & if it does then it's either a new dpf or getting it cleaned, but they don't offer that, I've found a few places that have dedicated cleaning machines, so really looking for experience's and/or recommendations.
Thanks.

Interesting question, I was thinking about this a few days ago. With modern diesels all having DPF's, and a lot of them are seldom being run for long enough to get hot enough to keep them cleaned out, there must be another solution for when they get blocked :?

Usually I don't do short runs, most have been 50 miles plus, then I had a few weeks before Christmas when I was working around the corner. I'm not sure if this contributed to the issue, it maybe that although the soot gets burnt it results in ash deposits which end up building until it causes the restriction. There are plenty of companies that will do a chemical clean with additives to aid burning off the soot, but I'm thinking something like the DPF machine clean offered by companies like this.

I'm hoping I'm not the first, as you say, it affects every diesel vehicle made in recent years. My van has only 15k miles.

I have got them cleaned with success but you need to find why its blocking .When they done the regen did much come out :?: Are you running it with low fuel in the tank or on short trips :?: Had a mk 8 in yesterday in limp mode and light on codes were dpf blocked but could not clear codes to do regen but tricked it by programming that a new dpf was fitted and hey presto cleared faults and done regen.Everything was in order only 32 klms left on fuel in tank  Waiting for phone call

Easy way to clean them is take them off, plug one end and fill them with red label hypocloride let it soak for 1/2 hour remove plug an then wash out with power washer as hot as you can get it
No 1 don't put the washer rite into the dpf- that will blow a hole in the matrix
No 2 when finished washing blow clean dry compressed air until its dry
I have done this 8 or 9 times with success

I have always run the van down to low fuel, usually around 20 miles to go then fill to brim. The dealer did say that they had a problem getting it to do the forced regen, so they may have done the "new dpf" trick. I don't know what came out, I wasn't there & nothing was mentioned, I'll ask.

Is that 8 or 9 times on the same DPF?
or
on 8 or 9 different DPFs?

Never dealt with any road going DPFs yet but had 13lt cat dpfs off and cleaned a few times successfully.

The high sulpher content in the "low" sulphur fuel doesn't help.
Then even worse is a coolant leak into the exhaust.

Different. Vehicles most of the vans are doing traffic control. On mobile roadworks so lots of 5 miles an hour 1st gear an their all restricted. to 50 mph anyway so even when the boys are finished for the day unless they drive in 3rd revved out the dpf is gonna clog ,the first one I cleaned I held the lance of the washer too far into the dpf can and it tore out the first few layers of mesh an it had to be replaced .....didnt make that mistake twice :(

My bus(volvo, 50 seater) had a dpf and even me driving it for 800miles in a single go would still clog it. The volvo stealership reversed the bus into a bush at the backside of the platform and put the ECU in a regen mode wich made it do 2.5k rpm (way above normal) and feed the engine huge amounts of diesel on the outstroke. The entire exaust was red hot after 5 minutes and it bellows out huge amounts of black soot. Think coal fired locomotive amounts of soot.
After 15 minutes the filter was clean and i was sent in my merry way. did consume about 2 gallons in those 15 minutes so you know a DPF is good for the enviroment.

Yes it’s more environmental sh@t just like they are banging on about electric vehicles been good for the environment no one ever mentions that if we all go electric how are they going to produce enough power to change them all up all this green cr@p is just there so they can tax the motorist

Found this which gives you a bit more insight into how they work. http://asecertificationtraining.com/die ... h-loading/
Now to get the bloody thing off! The front flange has the bolts welded to the dpf, the nuts are just about non existent & I'll have to cut them off & replace, the rear clamp is much the same so cut off & fit new.

Actually electric would reduce emissions by quite a bit. Even the most "dirty" coal plant is more eco friendly then a diesel and uses a lot less energy. Aka: the power plant is much more efficient then the regular car. Producing that power is not much of an issue, when there is money to be made the industry will find a way to make it and store it.
