Clutch

Postby Mad Husky » Sun Feb 18, 2018 8:05 pm

I have already posted the problems with my van in the technical section. My question is the clutch that is in it has only done a few thousand miles I believe a solid flywheel was fitted but it was done 2015 the van then did nowt for 2 years before i got it. Now should i just replace with the same or go back to a dmf I will be towing a caravan for a couple of dog camps and hauling 9 large dogs. Decisions.

Tell us what van it is.

Mk6 or 7
What engine size and output.
Front or rear wheel drive.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

The clutch feels mushy and noisy, gearbox seems to work ok now I have changed the oil, the clutch was nice and easy now feels horrible thrust bearing was making a noise and as far as I know it may not have been a new clutch that was put in.as it was before I got the van. The previous owners also told me that when they got the van the brakes did not work so 2+2 together leads me to think they used old parts. A thrust bearing would not be noisy after a thousand miles van is 115/350 2.4 Rwd There are noises when changing down so now think clutch has a problem varying biting points me thinks either some of the fingers have broke or the thrust bearing is braking up. So do I replace with same or replace with what was supposed to be in it I really don't want to do it again 3 thousand miles down the road.

the only time i had a dmf in a mk6 was in both of the ones i bought new and that was only until the original clutch wore out.
the solid flywheel doesnt wear out so one less thing to go wrong. ive stuck cheap clutches in that last for a few thousand miles so use a half decent one and youve no need to replace the flywheel-obviously

Cheers not knowing what a previous owner has done and I suspect used a second hand clutch, as you say will make it cheaper for me as I will only have to replace the worn bits I was just a bit concerned with towing knowing I will be over 2 ton (didn't really want to kill a new clutch). it was a MK 6 2006 forgot to put that bit in.

User control panel (top left) > Profile > Signature (see mine below) there forever and saves all the guesswork.

I have a brand new LUK pressure/friction plate from mine, not sure if they changed though.PM if interested.

Pass i don't know either if they changed between years but will bear it in mind. I am not going to do the job until next month as still need the van for the last race in march and have a more pressing thing to fix first namely the leaf spring that snapped Saturday. I will see if I can find out if they changed.
