Mk7 numberplate lights and high level brake lights.

Postby Popeye1981 » Wed Feb 21, 2018 5:37 pm

My number plate lights and high level brake lights have stopped working. Am I right in thinking the most common cause is a brake in wiring at the door? If it's not that any other ideas on what would be causing it? Cheers for any help at all.

If they were working, and you've lost all 3 at same time, yes likely wiring.

BUT,normally it's just bulbs....
Sometimes corrosion or melting of bulbholders, number plate lamps are fused separately,on some specs they only work if ignition is on...

Van was sat up for a few months. It's at the mechanics getting prepped for mot but he won't touch electrics. Get it home tomorrow so I'll check it all over.

You should be able to unscrew the inner door wood panels to gain access, then you could test the wires, if no sign of life then there could be a break where they entre the door on the hinge side,, possibly an earth issue maybe as the brake light and the number plate lights will be two separate live wire feeds.

Checked the bulb holders and all clean and as they should be so must be a break possibly in the flex.

While you were checking the bulb holders did you test to see if they were correctly live and earthed with a 12volt tester/screwdriver or a voltmeter ?

I've seen the earth wire break inside rear door, just as wiring comes out of the plastic sleeves and gets bent about thru opening and closing the door
