Potential oil leaks? I

Hi I've noticed what are potentially a couple of oil leaks around the gear box. If possible could someone tell me where they think the leaks might be coming from? The first one looks like it's a little pump or something like that, the second is oil on the front of the gear box. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Andrew

Normal rules apply.

What is the van ?

Looks like a rwd.
The little pump thing looks like the clutch slave, so it would be a five speed gearbox ?

Engine oil would normally be black with soot.
Gearbox oil is often quite smelly.
Could be clutch fluid, is the brake reservoir full as it feeds the clutch as well.

Sorry, the van is a 2.4 mk6 rwd on a 52 plate. It's a five as speed gearbox. Checked the brake reservoir the other day and the level seemed fine. The first picture looks like engine oil, the second looks like brakw/clutch fluid.

As v8dave said...if it was engine oil, it would be black...gear oil will smell horrid, it's more likely both your leaks are clutch fluid from the slave cyl.

Thanks Lord Knobrot. So the slave cylinder will have to be replaced? How expensive and difficult is it to replace the slave cylinder? Thanks Andrew

Don't know of cost as I have a Mk7 6 speed, they don't have an external slave cyl. Plus I'm in Aus so we get slugged more.

They're relatively easy to change though, then it's just a matter of bleeding the system properly.

Did you take the cap off to check the brake/clutch fluid or just look at marker on the side? They lie them bloody markers, looks like clutch fluid, it might be dripping slowly now but one day it'll spill its guts. N

I have checked the brake fluid. It's gone down from the last time I checked. It's leaking and it must be from the slave cylinder! Thanks

Quick job just twists off them remove the hose , quick tip gravity bleed it before refitting it is easier got mine here

Good idea to check or change gearbox oil while the slave is out as the fill /level plug is in behind the slave

Usually the problem is the rubber boot disintegrating not the slave leaking , so when you twist it and remove the slave to check or top up the gearbox the clutch rod falls away as the boot has died and a complete new unit non genuine is cheaper than just the genuine boot  My usual advise for anyone wanting to check the gearbox oil in a higher mileage unit is buy a new slave just in case at least you have a new boot to use when replacing the slave in the mount

Sorry, I'm missing something here.
OP has a rear wheel drive and you don't go anywhere near the slave when checking the gearbox oil on a rear wheel drive.

On 5-speed MT75 you do..! It's behind the slave cyl

On the 6-speed MT82 it's on right side rear of box..!
