Mk7 pre fuse box

Postby MrFlibble » Sun Feb 25, 2018 4:01 pm

The one under the driver's seat.

OK, I give up. How do you open the **** thing?

I've taken out the seat and both batteries. The manual suggests it just folds down, but I'm pulling on it hard enough that my (cold) fingers hurt and the plastic is seriously bending. I'm at the point that I'm worried about breaking something (I'm not sure whether I'll break first or the van).

So, how do you open it?

Mine has a cover which just pulls off, nothing folds down, the main fuse box is fixed :)

Yes there's no nut on mine, just the battery clamp in the way.

Yeah, I've taken out the battery clamp - the bit where I said "I've taken out the seat and both batteries" was a clue

It seems to be being retained on the side nearest the passenger seat. There's a big lump of something behind there, outside of the seat base, but I don't know whether that's got anything to do with it.

I have a suspicion there's a cable tie down there holding it closed. I'll have a look when I get the motivation to freeze my nuts off :)

The 'lump' is actually three connection points whose fuses are under the cover, think 2 of them are rates 60 amps.

The cover is hinged along it's bottom edge and clips over two small lugs, one at each side.

Best way to remove it is to pull each side out to the sides before hinging it open.
You need to get something hooked behind the edge just below the entry point for the battery cables.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Yeah, thanks v8dave, I found the clips yesterday when I had another go (this time with a torch). Those clips are a right PITA, as you need something to lever them out with, that's not straight

Anyway, I've got it open now; checked the windscreen fuses and they're OK, so I'll be checking the voltage on the screen next.

Also fitted the batteries from my old van (which are much newer than the ones on the new van), and also transplanted my battery isolator.

Thanks again.
