I suspect if the actuator or the VNT part of the turbo was playing up, it would throw up a code.??

I accidentally forgot to reconnect mine whilst I was fumbling around with the loom, it threw up a code as soon as I turned the ignition on.

Your are correct Knobby1.

Faulty elec actuator would lead to P2563 Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance

Variable vanes sticking due to carbon build up (Common problem) on VNT turbo with elec actuator or vac operated will lead too

P0299 Turbocharger/Supercharger "A" Underboost Condition
P0234 Turbocharger/Supercharger "A" Overboost Condition

P0299 & P0234 Can also be triggered by a faulty MAP sensor

Another "rare" occurrence..!

An EGR which is "stuck closed" will also often throw up an "overboost" code....and one which is "stuck open" will often throw up and "underboost" code....as well as all the regular MAF, MAP and EGR ones.

Had all these codes happen to mine....turbo, turbo actuator and boost pipes were all fine. I just changed the EGR and all the codes went away... and to this day they've never come back.

The exhaust manifold is on the opposite side to the EGR valve, it's easier to remove the inlet manifold to get at the EGR valve...even then you need to get underneath to get at two of the bolts.
