oil light on

Postby mhp932 » Mon Mar 12, 2018 11:32 pm

mk7 2009 2.2 diesel
drove van today , 1st time for a week, oil light stayed on, had van fully serviced 2 weeks ago, checked oil all ok, oil light went out after about 5 mikes on way back to garage who serviced it, any ideas why oil light took so long to go out, should i have drive it at all with light on

No you shouldn't drive it with the oil light on.! Although it could just be a duff pressure sensor, which might explain the light going off later. I've fitted an oil pressure gauge to my van just in case and so I can see what's actually going on in my engine.

Best to get it checked properly before you have an electrical failure....as in.... one of the con-rods gets out and beats the alternator to death..!

I would hazard a guess that it's merely a sensor malfunction, because driving an engine with no oil pressure will guarantee spectacular results within minutes :!: (E.G. as above, conrod scenario)

You really should get it properly checked before running the engine again though :(

I do wonder whether some oil flush was added, which dislodged some gunge.

5 miles? Really?

Reminds me of a phone call I received from my BIL,

"Hi, oil light is ON and it also say's STOP"
"When did the warnings appear", I asked...................."A week ago" he replied.
"Don't apply to Mensa" I said!!!!!!!

thanks for info, when I got to the garage the oil light was out, i was told that no faults would be found now the oil light was out, indicating the engine was running fine, a sensor was mentioned, can the garage check for a faulty sensor

The sensor is pretty basic, it's either on or it's off so the garage could check that it goes on and off as it should. If it's getting temperamental though there is no way of them telling that easily. Best bet is to just swap the sensor over for a new one. If the garage does it then ask them to check the pressure when they remove the sensor, they can screw their gauge into the hole the pressure switch came out of

+1...Sensor lives on the oil filter/cooler housing....reasonably easy to get at.

Min oil pressure @ idle = 1.25bar (~18psi)...min oil pressure @ 2000rpm = 2.0bar (~29psi)...it's usually higher than this though. My old beast has over 70psi @ idle cold and ~30psi @ idle when warmed up.
