Ex RAC vans

Postby cowasaki » Tue Mar 13, 2018 6:48 pm

Relating also to my thread about buying a replacement van. Anyone know about RAC vans?

There are two Transits and a VW locally at the same garage locally. I've had a look at the two Transit mk7s. They still have the mechanics racking and equipment basically in them. Their setups are both slightly different and van A has some of the drawers missing. van B is slightly more expensive but the drawers are in place. Both are in similar condition with similar mileage (£120K). The cheaper van A has a little more wear in the flooring but otherwise they are tidy.

Now both vans have the emergency lighting removed although the switches are still in place taking up the driver's cup holder. There are some bits in them that I can't quite work out at the moment such as a grey waterproof box in the back. They are both electric mirrors/electric windscreen, Air con and both have decent interiors/seats etc.

I'm interested but would like to know what people think. Has anyone bought one previously?

What is the racking etc worth if I was to sell it off?

I've rebuilt a Defender, several motorcycles and quite a bit to both a Mk6 & 7 Transit. Now bought a new Custom and just doing a few small bits to it.

I want to use it as day to day transport, going to work, transporting wood for my hobby, taking the dogs, transporting parts for the landrover etc. I would love to put all my tools into it and have a mobile workshop but (a) it would increase the weight and therefore cost of all my miles, (b) some thieving scum bag would steal it/from it and (c) I couldn't transport large items in it.

Basically I would be removing the racking and selling it or using it for something else. I might be able to keep a small part of the racking moved to an alternate location but it's unlikely.

Aren't the AA RAC vans fitted with a higher diff ratio to aid towing?
One of my customers works for the AA and the vans are well serviced and looked after (I assume the RAC are the same) mechanically, plus you get to join the tailgate club

The grey waterproof box that would be a sink would it not?. N

I drive a mk8 at work which is very nice. I doubt I will get a mk8/custom in my price range that isn't damaged/knackered in some way. I'll just have to have more fun in my Defender :)

It's ALL your fault!!!

I've just put the deposit down on a brand new Custom Limited 130 in blue with retractable roof rack, sat nav and all the stuff it normally has.... heated seats, windscreen & mirrors, cruise control, parking radar, air con, fancy stereo etc etc

They are giving me £2000 for the Mk6 plus £3500 dealer discount and said that so long as I can get it into the compound it doesn't matter what state it is in. I've already confirmed that I can remove the wing mirrors, passenger seat & all the covers, bulkhead, stereo, speakers etc. :)

It is such a shame that a perfectly good Mk6 is going to be crushed when it is absolutely fine and even has 9 months left on it's MOT :(

If anyone needs any bits that don't stop it driving let me know..

Blue and yes Evens Halshaw on the docks. I spent ages looking around for a van which was significantly better than my Mk6 and found I needed to spent a lot of dosh to get an improvement. I then decided that I didn't really need my Defender and the Transit so I've decided to get a new Transit and get rid of both the other vehicles. It's a shame about the Mk6 though as its really tidy other than a couple of small rust patches on the front wings which I could get rid of quite easily and had planned to.

No its the outgoing shapes hence £5500+vat discount from new with the scrappage discount included. Does this mean I can't hang around in the Mk6/7 area any more? I've got an ex-police mk7 on my drive as well :)
