Help What could be wrong with my recent van purchase

Postby markyt1980 » Wed Mar 14, 2018 11:44 pm

The Ford Transit Van 350 LWB 2.4 I bought last Monday 5th March 2018 is seriously not right. I haven't been able to use it since I drove it back from garage I bought from on finance.

I am not a mechanic just an average joe who test drove it and it seemed ok on the drive. I turned up at the garage and saw two employees in the van and was ushered into the sales office first and after about 30-45 minutes i was able to drive the van. It did start for me but i have since noticed the van does start when it has warmed up better, after a good few times of starting it.

However when cold started it's like this its really hard to get going. I have found that everyday I have had it. I have been putting in coolant to top it up to max level and everyday it's back at minimum level. I plugged in my cheap fault code reader and it has no codes. There is no white gunk on oil cap but there is a lot of white smoke and it seems to becoming from the bottom of the engine where the exhaust bit meets the engine. is that the manifold?

here is a youtube video i did of trying to start it and how the engine looks and sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2uzf580h3w

I think i need to try and reject the van under the consumer act 2015. already spoken to the finance company but would find it really helpful if anyone can tell me if this is worth keeping and getting fixed what its likely to be etc. or if its a total piece of junk.

totally gutted really :(

Yep...knock it back.....

I can't see you you tube vid at my work....What year model..?? Mk6 or Mk7..??

Your EGR cooler may have died and you're losing coolant through the exhaust.

Could just need a session on IDS or Forscan to get the injector learns done etc... Can you check the injector clamps are tight.??..Each clamp holds two injectors, if they're loose it'll sound like a bag of spanners and she'll run like a pig.!! Pop the oil filler cap off when she's idling and see if there's a silly amount of breathing happening..

Do you know if it's a 100, 115 or 140 hp engine?? Is it a 6 speed and does it have an electronic turbo actuator?? Is there a "cup holder" in the rocker cover..??

OK...I just had a look at your "Youtube" video on my phone....it's not a 140hp engine, it's either a 100hp or 115hp. Cam chain timing cover has been off recently too, indicating a possible top end issue, maybe the rocker ladder has let go... :?

Sounds terrible.....also the four ---- lines on your LCD dash while you're trying to start indicates a possible bad front battery, there's two batteries under the drivers seat, the front one is probably knackered.

When it finally did start it was only running on 2 or 3 pots....hence the white smoke...She's not well...I'd be taking it back and getting my money back...

Hi yes it is the 100bhp. Thank you so much for your advice. Re the cam chain cover I wouldn't have known what to look for to see if it had been off. Or about the battery lines on the dash. Running on 2 or 3 pots, is this something to do with injectors or the cylinders. Sorry I'm think when it comes to stuff like this, hence why I bought this lemon. :(

If you're not mechanically minded and prepared to do some work on it.... I'd be taking it back...You're right, they've sold you a lemon which is not fit for purpose....and you're protected by law.

yes exactly what i think. I have drafted my rejection letters to the dealership and the finance company and I'm gonna send them recorded delivery with proof of receipt. Its really not on. this van has somehow miraculously had a 126 point inspection and only had its MOT done on 18th Feb this year. God only knows how it passed the emissions test alone. i saw smoke but it was dark by the time i rived at the dealers so it was hard to see how bad the smoke was really. Anyway i will make sure i am only ever gonna buy if a mechanic came with me to look at it for me. id rather pay for that than the stress of this. and importantly no log book no deal full stop.

i also know since its MOT recorded milage, its added 300 odd miles and 99 miles of that was what i have done. Had problems with the V5 document as they said they lost it, and gave me a v62 and said i could tax it in the post office the next day. i couldn't because it was never transferred back into trade from prev owner. they said that they have spoken to previous owner and a new v5 has been requested (which dvla have confirmed to me), so waiting for this from the previous owner that sold it to the dealership. so i haven't even been able to use itand its been off road. silly of me to buy really but i stupidly believed the dealer as it was a dealer. i requested a copy of the 126 point inspection when i bought the van and was told it was gonna all be emailed over, it wasn't. one big nightmare from start to finish really.

Keep the video you made as evidence that the vehicle is in fit for purpose, hope you get a full refund and better luck with the next van you buy. N

I drafted letters for both the finance company and the dealership, but the finance company rang me this morning and have assigned me a case handler straight away. The lady i spoke to has been really helpful, and said i need to get a mechanic to do an inspection that is vat registered and they will fully support my case. She also said before i need to get the inspection done they are going to ring the dealership first and try to persuade them to just take it back as they lied about the milage between the advert and what i bought it as. i can prove the milage was more than the advert by about 600 miles due to the mot showing higher milage in february last month. so this may be a good place to start.

fingers crossed on this.

Well i have had great news from the finance company, who have been brilliant and more than helpful, the dealership have accepted the vans rejection. The finance company also said the discrepancy in the milage meant that they would not have accepted the finance in the first place. This is because it was just over their maximum milage allowed. SO now just got to try and arrange to get the vehicle back to the dealership. I can't drive it as the dealership has the V5 so i couldn't drive it. And thats apart from it being very smoky and not running correctly, so i wouldn't feel safe driving it back. So fingers crossed i can arrange to get them to pick it up.

Will the finance company finance you on another purchase from somewhere else? N
