not starting and cutting out while running

Postby Paul N » Sun Mar 18, 2018 11:15 pm

Hello im new to this site and know minimal about vans (just how to abuse them lol) my transit was playing up terribly a few months back with going into lymph mode and cutting out while driving especially going up hills ect . it turned out to be the injectors after having filters changed tanks flushed and so on .now the problem is similar where it wouldnt start so bought a new battery and was fine for a week or so now it wont start in the mornings so having to jump start it (seems to just need that little bit more power) and doesnt sound right right while running . its now cutting out and still going into lymph mode while running . to me it seems like a fuel shortage as the diagnostics are showing nothing and garage is at a loss it also is getting harder to jump start it and also needing a jump during the day i could really do with your advice please as this is not only driving me nuts but also causing a problem with work as not able to get van started some mornings so unable to go thank you for reading and any help you may have....

u bought a battery and that temporarily made things better.... ur alternator has likely failed.
I just experienced similar symptoms wiht a 1999 diesel 2.5 while the alternator was failing.
The turbo doesnt work when it happens and the fuel is controlled wrong aswell.

You need to get it to someone who knows what they're looking at....

As Ned said...the FWD 2.0 didn't come in 350 LWB did it..??

You still haven't told us if it's a TDCi or not..??

Mine's a 350 FWD LWB with the 2.0 tdci so they do exist but not that common. I expect the op is a tdci too as i'd have thought the 2.0 tddi would be underpowered on a big van.

As knobby says you could do with a garage that knows what they are talking about, see if you can get any recommendations for a garage that knows either transits or is a diesel specialist.

If you have a multimeter then you could check to see how your battery and alternator are performing. A fully charged battery should be 12.6V+ and with the engine running you should go to around 14.4v

Easiest way to check engine type is look at the injectors, if they have electrical connectors then it’s tdci, if only a metal pipe, then tddi.

Or tell us your reg no.?

Thats probably not a good enough test. the alternator fails temperamentaly, however if it was the cause i imagine you would be seeing a battery light at times, so if youre never seeing a battery light then rule out my suggestion.
