Garage Servicing

Postby Hallii » Mon Mar 19, 2018 7:07 pm

Now, I am a suspicious and cynical old man and I have serviced all my vehicles (as soon as they are out of makers warranty) myself. I only use quality parts and usually only Ford filters etc and Magnatech Fully Synthetic 5/30 oil.

As I said, I am getting old (75) I have a bad back and it's bloody cold out on the drive. So I used my local garage who have a good reputation and I supplied all the parts including oil for a major service. They did everything including changing the front pads for me, £96 inc Vat. Very reasonable. When I got home I found the Magnatech Fully Syth oil was still in the containers!
They had obviously used their own oil. Now I have a nagging doubt (like the TV ad!) that the oil they used might be a lesser quality to that which my old girl has become accustomed, I wonder what garages use nowadays? Should I drain and refill?
I would ring and ask the garage but since I haven't been charged for the oil they might decide I owe them for it

Just ring them, "anonymously" and ask what they use..! Most modern oils are fair these days...even if you're worried, let it go for 5000miles and change it.

There is when you have to deliver them 205L drums, they weigh a ton (one of my jobs at 19, delivering car spares and oil drums). N

Aye....but they're lighter than the same size drum full of water..!

Jes*s H Ch$1st, I have just checked the oil level (as you do) they have filled it so that the level is 50mm past the high mark , i.e. right up onto the wire bit. I am very cross, so cross that I am going to drain it and take it back and show the boss man how crap his grease monkey is.

I will put 6 ltrs of Magnatec in and all should be well.

I knew there was a reason I did servicing myself.

Oh! I forgot the brake fluid was running out the reservior as well, they pushed the cylinders back to fit the new brake pads and never checked the fluid level. I have sorted that as well!

Oh dear  A classic case of filling the oil until it's at the top of the dipstick, without waiting for it to settle :?

Likewise....I don't trust anyone, not even myself, do all my own servicing & mechanical work if I've the required got tools and/or space to do the job...and get my Subaru mechanic son to check my work. Between us we usually get a decent result.

I drained the oil and refilled today. 8.25 ltrs came out and it was dirty, only done about 2 miles from the garage so it must have acted as a bit of a flush, or they didn't wait for all the old stuff to finish draining.

I can't be bothered to go back and complain, I just won't use them again, I will do my own servicing.
