Mk7 hunting on idle

Postby Gordk » Mon Mar 19, 2018 10:33 pm

Hi all, I’ve not long since bought an 09 plate mk7 85. It has had a replacement engine from an 11, it has started hunting on idle when cold, now and then when warm. Any ideas what it could be?

Tons of info about prv its replacement and adaptation.
Just spend some time reading and you'll find it
Good luck

I’ve had a quick read, is there anyone close to Sheffield that has the software to do the update? Or even do the job? Thanks for your reply

If the PRV is indeed blown, it'll be the SCV which has caused it...Best to replace both with genuine Ford items and do the learns/PCM update etc...

If the PRV is not blown, she might get away just with doing the learns/PCM update. An injector leak-off test is often useful to determine the general health of your injectors.

Before even checking the prv my honest advice of someone who fixed the same issue just minutes ago... yes maybe an hour ago(!), is to disconnect the battery positive, disconnect the FRV wiring, spray it with a good contact cleaner, undo the 2 valve bolts, clean the surrounding area to the valve with a good cleaning agent and a brush, wipe it, then finish removing the bolts, gently wiggle the valve out and with an absolutely clean rag cover the opening to prevent contamination. Then take the valve to a worktop and remove the clip ring gently with circlip plyer. Pull the piston out for inspection again as gently as you can and bearing in mind there is a spring inside which you want out too for a thorough cleaning of the 3 components. If the piston is in good shape and moves freely up and down put the clip back on properly seated and reassemble the valve to the block, plug it and enjoy the sunshine driving up the hills for a test drive.
I'm happy as one can be as I have saved myself £400.

Unless you get the software update any repair will ultimately fail, it shouldn't cost much to get the update and learns done as it's tops an hours work. The update usually fixes the problem without a need to replace the SCV or PRV.

Where can I get the update done? Is it only ford that can do it?

Any one with the Ford software IDS can do it, so that's going to be Ford or Ford specialists mostly. Some forum members have IDS but I'm not sure if anyone is that close to Sheffield, you could try Karl if you are ever Manchester direction

Software update can also fix scratches inside the valve!

Oh didn't you know that?;) according to grogan197, software update is the key to fix hunting at idle problems.

I thought the PCM update just added a few things like "anti-stall" and cleaned up a few glitches...like the water in fuel warning issue etc...

Shows how much I don't know..!
