power intermittent fail and ignition warning light on.

Postby paulbutler » Wed Mar 21, 2018 12:18 pm

Hi all. This fault is weird. Van was running fine 11plate Mk7 I think. Parked up fine but next morning started and power steering intermittent and immediately power steer fails ignition warning light comes on. Added small amount of green steer fluid. lock to lock power steer fails and light comes on again. on and off. and all appears normal but not charging despite light being off. I am mechanical handling guy trying to get my van back on road. Vin WF0XXXTTFXBD74321.
Any help would be much appreciated. Paul B

I was going to suggest a duff drive spline on the PAS but Etis says you have a 2.4 RWD....if that's the case, you've either got a duff power steering pump or rack. Since the charge light is coming on, I'd suspect the pump is dying and intermittently stopping the belt from turning the alternator....or the alternator is coincidentally also failing.

cheers fellas. I know hey are not connected but ignition warning light only comes when power assist fails. as I said weird. Also not charging despite light out after start up before power steering is used. however my
old transit was the same. What was wrong with the old system when charging, the warning light lost its 12v negative.
Am still asking for help. Regards Paul

Watch the aux belt, while someone turns steering lock to lock with engine running,
You sure the belt doesn't 'stop' ??

Could just be a coincidence with the alt not charging straight away, some of them need a wee rev to kick them into life...brush pack not well or diode pack dying etc... :?
