I've got a 3kw constant 7kw peak one in my truck and I run a kettle toaster or 700w microwave off it (engine running) when microwaving

I don’t run engine as I did it once with the inverter a bit to far front the batteries as I had extended the power leads to get it in the best place but the power drain was to much so started the engine to see if it would help but it blow the split charge relay and not long after the alternator also packed up that may have been due to age of alternator and not connected to running engine but for what I use it to cook running tv and night heater I have never flattened the battery

I run my inverter and microwave off the power take off point on the back of the drivers seat. The standard 60 amp fuse is not up to the job, but a 100amp replacement has been fine. Ground goes straight to the negative on the battery.

I agree with everyone else, keep the inverter 12v leads as short as possible. It makes a big difference.

If you use 1 meter cable of 25mm2 (thumb thick) you stil have 0.4V of voltage drop at 120A. (Aka 1500W)
At 16mm2 you lose about 0.5V and you will start getting really flexible cables due to heat.

Keep this in mind and dont forget that you need some beefy connectors on the end of the wire.

Note that voltage drop means the battery will cut out sooner. This is why you need both batteries at the same time for these kinds of loads. Spreading the load means much less voltage drop and much lower punishment for the battery increasing the lifespan. Dont forget that such a load is basically the same as constantly cranking the engine.

So how do I actually attach said inverter to battery? As I mentioned earlier, electrics aren’t my thing can I drill hole in bulkhead and pass cables through so inverter is in rear of van, shame I can’t get a microwave that plugs into 12v I’ve got 3 in the rear of van!!!!

If you use it for work...yes.!! I guess that would then be considered "cooking the books" I suspect...

I almost laughed then I suppose I’ve got to eat!!
On a serious note I’m considering the inverter route, might get some professional help though I’ll probably blow my van up
