Mk7 Towbar Fitting

Postby Frankatmk » Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:07 pm

According to the Transit Manual wiring diagram for Trailer socket, there is a trailer socket, and a Trailer Control Unit.(All 13 connections)
Question is,, Where??
Looking for the best place to wire in the bypass filter for 7 pin 12n/12s sockets
Anybody have the physical location for the above please?

I used the right light cluster and I located the bypass relay inside the van behind the right cluster to keep it clean and dry, there was a cigar socket T connector there which I took a live feed from also.

I had the online fuse on the live for the bypass relay which I removed when not using the trailer connection, the relay clicks etc when you indicate which is annoying!

Won't be a problem if you are sealed in though

There is a trailer connection point on the standard wiring. It is on the engine bay chassis rail below the engine bay fuse box.

The trailer control unit, if a factory trailer socket is fitted, lives behind the plastic liner for the lhd front door step, the rhd step houses the jack and there is actually quite a bit of room in there.

The genuine ford kit includes the harness to run down the chassis to the rear bumper.

If you're fitting yourself then I suggest picking up power from the orange connector in the right hand rear door pillar if it is fitted, some really low spec vehicles do not have it. And it won't be there on luton bodies, campers or crew cabs.

Wiring kits with proper connectors to intercept the rear light power are available and I think they are worth the money.
Somehow the rear light connectors seem to get wet, maybe condensation in the pillar. Using clip on connectors that pierce the insulation is not a good idea.

Those ford wiring kits are expensive aren't they? Also do you need to config them?

7 way bypass relay is like 15 pounds or less and use solder and heat shrink, place the relay inside the back of the van.

That and the way Dave said are the 2 options :-)

Thanks for the Info. I have a 6 seater crew so doubt if a live orange, so will run a new one.
Will look for the cig lighter socket tho:)
And the front tow socket, altho designed for the new 13 pin plugs, I hope fitting seven pins dont throw up a fault on the MOT.
Thanks for the help @_

Not to into the legal side of sockets but I know you can step down from 13 to 7 but can't see it the other way.
Are we legally required to fit 13 pin these days or are 7 pin ones still legal in the uk?

Where's rog, paul2012 and v8dave when you need them :P

I'm lurking.....

www.gov.uk does not mention anything apart from bars being type approved for vehicles first built since 1998.
Mk6 and mk7 transits need a type approved towbar.

My towbar and wiring are compatible with the age of my van, and the bar has the required markings.
The hardware is witter which is what the factory appeared to use at that time.

I'm after a fold away tow bar :-)

I thought if it twisted and rotated under the spare wheel and locked it would double up as security for the wheel and be out of sight when not in use.

I'll probably get the factory cable for my custom I believe it should plug in somewhere near the passenger side?.
