gearbox identification

Postby rustytransit » Thu Mar 22, 2018 11:50 pm

I cannot stand any more gearbox whine so I have searched and found a 5 speed gearbox from a 115 psi engine , question is will it fit my 85 psi drive shafts.
I know that higher output engines have more splines on the drive shaft , I just do not which engine output that is.
the box I have found has done less than 50000 miles so i am just wanting to make sure . I would take an old drive shaft to check, but i chucked them all out.

thanks in advance.

According to the parts list, the 110 & 130 are the same....the 115 and 140 are the same...the 85 is different again....but there's no mention of spline counts:

All mk7 2.2 FWD drive shafts are 36 spline. 8)

This is different on mk6's.
Early models up to 06/2003 had 26 spline shafts. Later models from 07/2003 had 36 spline.

In the past When buying drive shafts I have been asked how many splines on the shaft as apparently there is more than one choice in the catalogue.

Yes there are several listed due to engine power. Although the diffs in FWD mk7 gearbox is the same fitted in mk6 gearboxes from 2003-2006.
According to Ford.

Also know mk7 d/shafts fit mk6 gearboxes. I've mk7 2.2 engine & d/shafts with a mk6 5sp gearbox (4.23) from a 2005 mk6 100ps fitted in my van 8)

Interesting, viewed many mark 6 gearbox on the net but always dismissed them as not suitable
